__. I's like to hear experience here. My auto trans has just began acting up. It's absolutely fine in forward mode - it picks up, shifts smoothly and correctly, downshifts, etc. THere seem to be no problems at all. There is also an "accelerator interlock" that pauses power when the transmission shift - this seems to be working properly, too.
__. However, recently it's began to balk at engaging in reverse. When I come to a stop, engage reverse, and give it some foot pedal, the engine revs but the bus doesn't move for 10-15 seconds. When it finally begins to move, it creeps backwards but never seems to fully engage. It did this a couple of days ago when a bus mechanic was standing nearby and he said "sounds as if it's low on fluid" but he was busy with other things and we didn't get a chance to trouble shoot at the time.
__. Also, when it's doing this, giving it a lot of pedal doesn't really do anything - the engine won't rev like it will when it's in neutral. It just kinda does nothing - limited engine revs and no movement backward.
__. Any thoughts? This is an English Daimler Fleetline bus, 1976, with Leyland O-680 engine, external torque converter, and automatic transmission.
__. Thanks, Bruce Henderson, North Carolina USA

Like what Jimmci9 already said sound like band or clutch (adjustment only on band) or worn. I am only experience old car Hydromatic and Powerglide.

Jerry - Bruce's coach doesn't have an Allison, it's a British double decker with a Leyland powertrain in it.

Bruce - Before spending any $$ on it, have you checked the transmission oil level? It could be as simple as low fluid, or as complex as internal problems. Could even be related to the door/transmission interlock system.

Might also check to see if there's a trouble-shooting section in the shop manual, or do a little Google searching for British busnut forums to find someone who's familiar with your coach's powertrain.

Hello Bruce.

Also a simple one, is making sure that the linkage is fully engaging the reverse position at the transmission, not just showing reverse at the front and only nudging part way there at the back.

Try the telephone to a shop where these old beasts are used. Sightseeing in Niagara Falls, Ontario and Gray Line in New York/New Jersey both have or recently had, old British double decks.

Find out a good time to call and who to talk to for a few minutes on your first call. Make sure they know you aren't commercial, but a busnut who needs a bit of advice.

happy coaching!
