Questions on electric wiper conversions?I just got two electric wiper motors, etc. from a fellow bus nut. They came off a Blue Bird coach and I would like to put them on my 1984 Eagle 10.
1. Have any of you done it and have any helpful ideas or suggestions?
2. They have a two speed switch but no intermittent. If I get a different switch with all three of those controls on it, will it provide the intermittent that I want?
3. J.C.Whitney has a separate intermittent switch to add on. Is this the way to go?
4. Can I keep the separate air windshield washer unit and use it with this set up?
Thanks for any suggestions or ideas.

On mine the intermittent is entirely controlled by the switch. The wiper motor has two speeds wired into it but the intermittent is an IC inside the switch. I think the switches are a Cole Hersey 75600-04 is the number on them. That switch provides 2 speeds plus the intermittent when combined with a motor capable of two speed operation. It also has a "push to squirt" for the washer circuit with a delayed wiper shutoff after the wash cycle.

I install a single wipe motor and made link arms to run the wipers arms, I had to make a cross link arm from the top of the one wiper arm to the bottom of the other wiper arm, so they move away from each other (opposite directions) rather than moving in the same direction. This way they park in the middle and both sweep to the outside.

I used a wiper motor off a hwy tractor /w high low switch and intermittent/washer switch. Works great...way better than air wipers

Ron,

Not a warning, not a criticism, just a comment.
Hwy Trucks generally have smaller wipers than busses. Busses require stronger motors and linkages due to the extra length and area they have to sweep.

I'm sure it works as you've stated, however I worry and suggest you should keep an eye out for how much current is going to the motor in heavy rain or slush conditions, and/or maybe figure a way to monitor the temp of the hot lead into the motor.

It'd be the pits if the motor that could keep up with its task in mild conditions found itself overstressed in severe conditions and took the easy way out and failed!

Kinda "murphy's law" type thing you don't want to experience. An amp load greater than the conductor size or the wire getting hot would be a clue! FWIW

Marc...not to worry...I ran this motor on a dry windshield for 3hrs (this would be the greatest coefficient of friction) and it didn't even get warm. I also ran a water hose on each side to simulate a down-pour (that I wouldn't drive in) and it worked fine. I used self-aligning ball bushing ends on the link arms to keep the friction down. It takes very little to drive the wipers when the window is wet...it's a torque' little gear motor, damm near took my finger off when I was adjusting the "park" setting on the motor position.

Super, Now that news makes your conversion to electric drive verrrry interesting!

Heck, that sounds like a much more severe test and would have witnessed me going down the road much less prepped than you!

Marc...if you want a cad drawing or PDF, of the linkage setup email me. If you send me your measurements on all your, wiper arm c/c, control arm offest(from wiper arm), wiper arm length and width of window, I can run a motion analysis to get all the compontents the right length, which is essential for this system to work the first time. I think all the new buses was this system, I know Prevo does

Ron,

Great timing I was just trying to work all of this out myself. I've the motor and the glass area, but still working on the linkages. I'm also changing from bottom mounted to top mounted and it's like having a blank canvas to work on. I'd like to chat by e-mail off line if you don't mind. Please get back to me at my home E-mail xxrussbarnes@mindspring.comXX (delete x's)
Thanks,
Russ
