While having the front end alignement done today. The guy took a general check aound and under my 4104. He found the prop shaft flange a little loose moves 1/4 to 1/2" and the U- joint next to it also a little loose.
Has anyone else had this problem?
Thanks
John

Hey John,
How's it??
It is normal for the flange to move free until the slack is taken up by the gears in the differential. I think your talking a 1/4" not a 1/4 turn? I have seen 1/8 to 1/4 loose freeplay on some, not unusual.
Grease it up & go!!!

John, loose? In what way loose? U-joints should not be loose at all.

Joe/Brian,
If you hold the flange on each side and pull and push it has about 1/2" movement. Not in and out, but if you push one side and pull the other. The oil seal is not leaking any oil and there is no bearing type noise when running.
There is also some slack in the universal joint that I will change.

Does anyone know the part# for a universal joint for the 4104?
Thanks

I am no expert on a 4104 but how is it possible to have 1/4" to 1/2" of side movement in a pinion bearing and still be usable? Is it possible that you are talking about the tail shaft out of the transmission?

John, though I am not familiar with your coach, as a diesel mechanic with 25 years experience I'd have to think this is a serious problem, and it needs to be looked at by someone qualified.

I hope I'm wrong, but it certainly sounds bad enough that a destructive failure was a near future event.

If you have to take it anywhere, do it gingerly.

John ,Is it possible the pinion shaft is tight and the flange nut is loose or the splines are worn causing this flopping movement?? Maybe just need a new flange? Joe

I was going to take the bus down to mexico today . But due to this problem I will hotel it and diconnect the drive shaft from the pinion flange on my return sunday . I hope it is just a matter of tightening the large nut under the flange ( 800 to 1100 lbs tourqe )But before I got under there I wanted to understand all the possibilities. The U joint has a little play in it( I will change ) which is also adding to the play in that area. But until I get the drive shaft off I will not know whats going on with the pinion flang.
Thanks.

Hi John,
With a little grease that old bus would keep rolling. loose flange, ujoint & all!
Don't want to rain on your party, go for it!!
BTW, remember my 4-1/8 differential I had stored in my baggage bay when we met up in BusNUSA??
Thought it would sit there forever....But I sold it to a guy in a real need. Good for him, good for me...
Point of interest mentioning it is about how bad his differential was & still running. He didn't even notice excess noise from it. What had happened was MOST of the bolts holding the ring gear onto the carrier were gone. Yes gone, like all chewed up to nothing thru the gears.
And still going. That's better than the Enegizer Bunny!!! Didn't know he had a problem until it was being serviced in shop & checked the shiny gear lube!
Have A Fun Turkey Holiday Weekend.
Sorry it is without the bus. Later, Hondo
