I've looking to buy a V730 tranny that the P/N is 23012488 and S/N is 0520007708 can anybody tell me if this has overdrive? Also the tranny thats on my bus say it's a model V730-D And the other one just say's V730. Is that still the same?

I looked in the V730 book and got the following info for the tranny you have. V730 and V730D - No difference. You have the TC490 - 2.51 to 1 stall torque convertor. Bevel gears are standard with a PTO shaft. Bevel gears # 6880947-std. Control valve has the optional calibration. No O/D. Hope this is useful to you. Bill

What I here you say is that the one in the bus now, and the one I am looking to buy, neither one has O/D right? If I don't take no more than two trips a year for about 2000 miles per trip, would it be worth the expanse to have the O/D add?

Al - Just to add to the confusion slightly, the bevel gears in your V-730 are slightly overdriven, as the ratio is 0.87:1. Third gear is 1:1, so when you do the math, the overall effective gear ratio, with the stock 4106 differential, comes out as 3.589:1

The stock 4106 overall ratio with the manual 4-spd calculates out to be 3.333:1

Now you can see why the V-730 coach loses some top speed capability, due to the lower overall ratio.

But wait, there's some speed relief available, at somewhat modest cost:

Install some 11R 24.5 drive tires that turn about 470 revs per mile. These will bring the overall ratio back to just about the same as the 4-sp, so you gain back the speed. Unfortunately, you don't gain back the fuel economy, but that's only because you're having so much fun drag-racing the stick shift guys!! :-)

Clear as mud?

Does anyone know if adding a PTO to a V730 that doesn't have one is as simple as bolting on the PTO shaft assembly? My coach came without air conditioning and the PTO that goes with it, but I would like to use the PTO for a couple other things.

Folks HAVE used the air cond pto to run other accessories. It is capable of about 60hp so mount everything well , and use some sort of clutch , so the item can be disconected if needed.

The info is for the tranny you are looking to buy. The P/N 23012488. You can add O/D to the V730 by looking at Bill Teals web page. It is a lot of work but it works. He put a lot of miles on one. I got all the info from him but now that I am doing an engine sway I don't know if I can get it to work on the new setup. He is a real nice guy to deal with. For a couple of trips a year I wouldn't put the O/D onto the V730 unless you want to be different. That is the sign of a true busnut.

Unless you have the casting in the case of your V730 there is no way possible to add the PTO. If you have the casting in yours all you need is the parts and take the tranny off the engine and pull out the bevel gears and install. Be very careful when putting the shims back that you DON'T BLOCK THE OIL HOLE. It is very easy to block the oil hole. A friend of mine lost his tranny after about 1000 miles because the rebuilder let one shim turn and covered up the passage. The bevel gears get splash lube only if the hole is covered and the bearings will sieze up. Bill

Thanks to:

Thanks again for that great info.
And Bill, I think I will take your advice and install it as is. Being that the one on the bus has metal in the oil. I should have left good alone. But I got to talking to the transmission mechanic at the Stewart & Stevenson here I our area, and he recommended that I change the oil in the transmission to 15W30. And thats when all troubles began. The mechanic said that Allison was now going that weight of oil. But live and learn. Thanks Again

The website for Bill Teal and his O/D unit are as follows. He will sell the plans on how to put it into a V730. They are very detailed. You need the planetary drive from a VS2-6 to get the right ratio.
