I finally picked up my 4106 last Saturday. Drove it from Burnsville MN and to SW MO: something like 600 miles. I sure do like to drive that old box. Took a bus up there to get it the night before (Friday night) but didn't sleep much. Had trouble starting; seemed like low batteries; would only turn over once or 1/2 & then give up. The shop hooked up a charger for about 10 min & she pooped right to life. I didn't shut'r down all the way home; lift it running while I caught 3 hours of sleep @ a stop. Got in @ 2:30 in the morn & disconnected the batteries thinking there might be a drain. One of the batteries had been replaced about two weeks prior along w/a bad cable. Now, here at home, all I get is a big click at the starter. Will hook up to shore-charger for 6 hours or so and try to start again. Next thought I would start by cleaning all connections. I would like verify battery/starter performance by providing power directly to the starter but am not sure how. Pretty much ripped out all the old interior and am getting ready to put in new. Hi Joe,

Congrats on your purchase. I can share the excitement and anxiety of your 'trip home' journey. I had one similar driving back from Sacramento. Except I was worried about cracked and rotting old tires.

Sounds to me like you just have a bad battery. Even if one was replaced, if the other is bad, the good one is trying to make up for the bad one, and killing itself in the process. I assume you have two 8Ds parallel? I'd be suspect of the battery that was not recently replaced. You could take it out of the system and try just using the one good one as a test. (when fully charged again) I found in warm weather my bus will start on only one battery with no problem, although I always use both in parallel as it was designed.

Joe
I had the same experience in Alabama when I made the mistake of turning off the engine at a fuel stop. After spending the night at the truck stop on the floor of the bus, next morning I found the hot cable from the battery had worn insulation at the last clamp on the bulkhead and was shorting out somewhat on the bulkhead, but not enough to cause a spark (new to me!)The hot terminal on the starter was also a little loose. It now starts great cold, but not at all hot. As soon as this 100 degree weather passes, I'll replace the starter, since it is obviously dragging. At the same time I'll make a new battery cable and clamp it carefully. FWIW

I Think we have all had this one, what i did on my 06 was to carefully check both batteries, had to replace one of them, then went to every juntion point that the cables go and removed them one at a time and cleaned all connections , then clean the often overlooked ground, after that no more problems. , most of the time its poor connectins that cause these problems , the 06 will start hot or cold with a single 8-d battery , but it does better with the two that come with it .
