WHAT CAUSES THE ENGINE TO SMOKE WHEN I PULL AWAY FROM A STOP OR WHEN I REALLY POUND ON THE ACCELERATOR.THE CLOCK SAYS IT HAS 450000 MILES ON IT

Overfueling. This can be controlled by your foot or by a throttle delay.

Too much fuel getting dumped into the engine due to:

1. Larger injectors than are called for
2. Poor rack adjustment
3. A heavy right foot that's too used to automobile driving

With 450,000 miles it could be low compression from shot rings ,
or rusted & pitted cylinder walls from too much sitting with out preservation.

The COLOR if the smoke would help the diagnosis, also miles per gallon of lube oil.

If it was bad rings or bad cylinder walls, it would smoke all the time not just when pulling away from a stop sign.

you are just giving it more fuel than it can burn...instead of instant acceleration...a diesel needs to be raised in r.p. m. more slowly...if you see a hill,start building your speed BEFORE you get to it
