I have relined the shoes on my 87 Prevost, but I now have a 97 that I am trying to learn.

It had disc brakes on the steer and tag axles and they are self adjusting and have ABS. In the very near future I am going to replace the pads. Can any of the real mechanics on this board give me some tips and advice on this job?

My ordinary practice when doing stuff like this is to just dive in, but since my driveway is 300 feet long and drops 80 feet right out of my garage I want to do this right otherwise the first test drive is going to get exciting.

To be honest there is only two or three trucks in our fleet with air disc brakes and I have yet to tackle them...

But unless there is something I'm not clued in on with Prevost, it really ought to be a straight forward affair. As you may know, generally disc pads are much easier to replace than brake shoes and I can't believe this will be different.

My #1 recommendation is that before you do anything, BUY THE SERVICE MANUAL for your coach.

And if you are like me you'll also buy the Parts Manual too... With it you can see exploded views of the things you want to repair AND you'll not only know what to call a part when you order one you'll have the part number too.

#2 recommendation is: Whatever you do, be VERY gentle with anything that is associated with your brakes that has wires coming out of it.

Did I mention... Buy the manual?

Brian,

I have the manual and the parts manual. The writers of the manual apparently thought this task was so simple it did not require any more explanation othere than how to determine when the wear indicator shows replacement is necessary.

In the absence of words of wisdom I guess I'll just dive in and start taking things apart.

I'll start by loosening the slack adjusters and see what is wiggling around and where it is secured.

Jon, I think you'll be alright, the self-adjusting slack adjusters might be tricky, but hopefully the service manual will have something regarding backing them off.

If your service manual is really that limited, I might be inclined to buy a MOTOR manual (published by Haynes and aparently available online) for HD trucks especially if the section on brakes shows air discs, which it should... Plus MOTOR ususally has really helpful sections on starters and alternators...

What is ironic is on my 1987 the maintenance manual goes into endless detail on slack adjusters, making them seem way too complicated for a mere mortal to tackle.

When I relined my brakes I used the opportunity to really clean things up and see how it all worked. All they would have had to say on the subject is turn the 9/16 bolt to tighten or loosen.

I'm going to see about the heavy duty manual. Thanks.

Jon - IIRC, aren't those Bendix disc brakes on your '97? If so, maybe you can get some tech help from Bendix. Here's a link to their website's tech support area:
