Someone that has a 19936V92 please let me know what Weight of Oil to run in the engine. When we purchased the bus 2 months ago they had put in 10w-30. I have always run 15w-40 in my big truck N14 525hp cummins. A friend of mine says to run straight 40 weight. So what weight oil and how many gallons do I purchase. Thanks |

Steve In 2 stroke DD's you always run a straight grade of name brand oil. I run 40 wt except in the winter then I use 30 wt. Years ago I put this very question to our local DD dealer and their reply was if a 2 stroke came back for warranty the first thing they check was the scuf of the pistons on the cylinder walls. If there had been multigrade oil in the engine they could tell and there was no warranty. Da book also says straight grade as well. Bill |

The guy (church/charter operator) I bought mine from was using 20w50 el'cheapo grade. The engine leaked, burned a little oil, and ran crappy. After the oil/filter change, I made sure there was good grade 40w in it. The leaks have diminished, whatever small amount of blue smoke there was, is gone and it sounds a whole lot happier going down the road. (Of course, it -could be-, that it's just because I'm an excellent driver and all-round good person....) |

Steve (and others) - This topic seems to come up every six to eight weeks or so it seems. . . Detroit Diesel has very specific specifications for oil usage in their engines. Suggest you download and print out the following link, and keep it with you. Two stroke specs start in Section 2.2: http://www.detroitdiesel.com/public/technicianguides/7se270.pdf If any shop questions your request, pull out this and tell them to argue with the factory! Simiply, DDA recommends straight 40 wt, API classification CF-2 oil with a 1% or less sulfated ash content. Some brands that meet these specs are: Chevron Delo 100 (NOT 400!!) Shell Rotella T Exxon XD-3 Monogrades Citgo Citigard Transit Low Ash You normally will not find these sitting on the shelf at your local WalMart. Most of the time, you'll have to order it from a supplier by the case (6 gallons per case) - you'll need two cases minimum, 'cause the engine takes 7 gallons with an oil & filter change. Here are links to Chevron's and Shell's distributor locator webpages: Chevron: http://www.chevron.com/prodserv/nafl/wheretobuy.shtm Shell: http://www.shell-lubricants.com/distributors.php Finally, if you're reading this message at the BBS itself, rather than via subscription, you'll find a whole lot more info on this subject if you'll utilize the archives, found by clicking on "Search" under the Utilities header on your left. Don, I run our coach about a thousand miles before I found out it had Rotella 15-40 in it. I changed it out to Rotella-T SAE 40 as soon as I could get a case. As far as I know it didn't do any damage. Also, Delo 100 is a very good oil. It't just easier for me to get the Rotella here where I live. I had to drive 55 miles to get the Delo vs 18 miles for the Rotella. Glenn |
