Ian, attached is a .mpg of Jim (Jimmci9 #2) getting the old 4104 that had been sitting for years in Corpus Christi TX rolling under its own power. You may recall some people from GA were coming with the thought of driving it home, it needed lots of stuff to get it going. Can you put it on the board for us? (Editor's note: You bet, Don. Thanks for the great resurrection movie!!) 4104 movie |

credit for the movie goes to ken williams of the z smith company.... it was a blast getting the old 8v71 to start... had to replace fuel lines, purge the fuel system with laquer thinner to free up stuck injectors.. then flush it with diesel... new battery cables straight to 2 8d batteries.... it started right up.. no smoke.. been sitting for about 3 yrs... drove it about 100yds.... will return to the scene of the crime next weekend to check out the running gear... thanks to luke of us coach for the service manual, jlvickers for his knowledge of gm coaches and don schwanke for his coaching and inspiration....glad this is a hobby and not a job..... |

Good job getting her going. I wish mine were that simple. After hiding an entire city block in smoke, we pulled the head and found one cyl. with burned, bent and broken valves and piston damage from the fragments. Three other cyls. with broken rings and scars in the cyl. walls. The coach came with a rebuilt head, but it is the old style with only two valves per cyl. We don't know if the four valve head can be saved. I think I need to review my budget. I hear Gravy Train is better with warm water. Cable 4104-449 |

Well...why not use the 2V head? It might not get you there fast, but it should still get you there. |

Cable, My 4104/671 has the 2 valve head, I managed and can pretty much keep up with those MCI-12,S coming out of Louiville, they took me on the hills but I kept on taking them on the flats. They did not leave me even with my 2 valver. They of course are governed to 73mph and I can get 76mph which gave me the edge I needed to stay with them. Now it would be diffrent keeping with them on the left coast. John |

It was a cool vidio I would like to see more like that Some from a cold start to see all the smoke people talk about I bet mine smokes more I should have done a vidio of mine starting at 40 deg. block heater off it made lots of cool sounds but what amazed me was it started right up I was not planning on it starting just wanted to have the charger kick up to high charge if I just bumped it over. The white smoke did block out the sun turned day to night . (just unburned diesel that clears up in a 1/4 mile or so). Brian 4905 Klamath Falls Oregon |

Works for me, too, TD. Did the pic come up on your screen? Once the pic comes up, give it a few seconds (or minutes, if you're on a dial-up connection!), you should hear it, as it starts automatically. And it will continue to do so, over and over, until you log off. Here's the link again: www.pacbus.org/flash/detroit.swf The Pacific Bus Museum (www.pacbus.org) is a legitimate non-profit, and welcomes new members and/or donations to help keep the fleet going. Check out the rest of the site. . . BTW, I've had the opportunity to drive ol' 246, the bus pictured. What a kick! RJ PD4106-2784 Fresno CA |

Something about smoke, since the topic keeps coming up. I drove my "new" bus (GMC 4905) home from Oregon to Topeka KS years ago, it did not smoke or burn any oil. It took me 6 years to get the conversion all done, since I was determined to do everything myself. I had started it often, brought it up to temp etc. When the conversion was complete, I locked up the house and headed out on the highway for a thousand mile trip. As I hit the highway and gave it fuel to get up to highway speed, there was such a smoke that I was sure I had busted something, white smoke, no mosquitos in that area yet years later. Only a half mile down the road, the smoke quit and my heart starting beating again, never did it again ever, never used any oil. I guess that the huge 4905 muffler insides was coated with unburned diesel fuel, and it atomized and smoked when finally on the road and getting the muffler hot enough. Moral of the story is, never get too excited when starting up a bus that has been sitting and idling lots if it smokes a bit. |

yep...the horizontal muffler...kinda makes ya' wonder what a 1/8" hole in the bottom of the muffler would do... |

Here's my 8V 71 on cold start... rrruuup... clatter... rrruuup... clatter... rrruuup... rrruuup... rrruuup... ruup.. ruup.. ruup.. ruup.. rup.. rup.. ruuuuuurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr........ It's such a sweet sound... about 4 long rruups, 4 short, one really long and then smooth idol. The first two ruups have some white smoke, then it clears up. When I start her in below freezing weather, I have more long ruups with longer spaces in between them before the short ones start.

Is that thing turbo'ed? I thought I heard a distinct whine on acceleration. Don: Speak of smoke. I went w/a friend to Hausman 2 yrs. ago to pick up a 102A3 w/8v92 that he had bought with the presumption it needed an in frame at minimum. We started it and killed every mosquito in Garden Grove, drove away, and killed some more for the next 35-40 miles up the freeway. About Pasadena, while bypassing LA, and having run it at 65-70 all the way, it started to clear. By the time we hit the top of the Grapevine this thing was running clean enough to sniff the exhaust. The 2 of us just finished a 9k mi. trip together and that same "smoker" used 9 qts. of oil, including leaks. |
