The V730 tranny on my 4106 is contaminated with metal shaving, but the good part about it, is I have a spare V730 tranny. The V730 on the bus has overdrive and the spare dose not. My question is. Is it as simple as changeing the valve body on the tranny to make the one without overdrive to an overdrive tranny?

I would be very surprised if you really had an O/D V730. They were as scarce as hens teeth. If you give me the serial number I can look it up and tell you what is in it. jimmci9#2 is right when he says that if it is truly an O/D then you will have to change the bevel gears over to the other one. Actually. the vast majority of V730s have a .875 overdrive bevel gearset.

A very few which were usually mated to 6V71 engines and installed in 40 foot transit coaches have a 1.06 underdrive bevel gearset.

The underdrive V730 is probably not going to be a desirable transmission for an over the road conversion.

a 84 year old fellow in Victoria changed out his 4 speed manual for a v730 that had just been rebuilt. he put it in a 4104 and as he is one very sharp fellow and an ex. machinest- mac. he did the change over and figured out how to do it without changing the rear end . there is NO vibration at any speed and to his suprise it has the over drive so now at 1600 rpm he is over 60 mph. this was a X transit tranny. out of a GMC 5308.

Mel, was it a V730 or was it a VS-2? They look very much alike. The VS-2 would yield very good road speed/rpms.

Dont forget, there is some guy up North that does or has plans for putting the splitter clutch/planetary from a VS2 into the front of a V730 for a REAL overdrive 730. I have heard it works extremely well. Anybody got one of those?

There are three ways you can swap in a V730 into a 4104 and not have vibration and U joint wear problems - swap in a 4106 or RTS axle, turn the 4104 axle housing over so the differential is offset to the passenger side of the coach, or alter the engine and transmission mountng so that the output of the transmission and the input of the differential lines up. The last one usually means building a new set of engine access doors.

Don no it was a V730 as the transit buses that i had last fall some had the v730 and some had the VS2, and murray did the latter he moved the front of the motor out to get the right angle for the drive shaft and it works great.

Late model Canadian fishbowls were built with V730s. Most,if not all Pontiac New Looks were built with the older transmission.

I should have said part numbers instead of serial numbers. Sorry. Look at the plate and give me the part number. They will start with 688, 230 or 295. Make sure that the tranny is a V730 as well. I have no info on the VS2's if it turns out to be one of then as Charles suggests. I have the O/H info but nothing else for them. Bill

The two tranny numbers you posted are the same internally. The converter is a TC-470 with a 3.25 to 1 stall. The bevel gears are 6880947 and are a matched set. They are the standard V730 setup with a .85 final drive. Hope this helps you. Bill
