I have a 1982 Silver Eagle. I have a problem with the parking break not releasing. I have noticed that when the Low Air gauge reads 100 PSI (which is where it tops off at) the break will release. The High Air tops off at 140 PSI. I have adjusted the air pressure regulator, but the low air will not go past 100 PSI.

If the bus sits idled for a little bit, the low air will drop a few PSI. Then I have to turn on fast idle, or give it gas to get the pressure to build. The high air pressure is not affect, and does not seem to drop while the bus is running. The low air does not drop enough to cause the buzzer to go off, we are only talking a few PSI. Sometimes I can get luck, and hold the parking break valve in for about 10 seconds, and it will stay released. But that only seems to be on a good day.

I have noticed a very small air leak in the windshield wipers. Is the parking break release value connected to the low pressure? Since I am going to tear into the dash to fix the wipers valves, would the parking break valve need replaced also?

When this happened to me it was a blown bellows in one of the DD3's. Look under neath and see of the brake bellows on one is releasing and not the other. If one side is releasing then it is proberly a problem with the DD3.

Sounds like you have some air pressure problems also.

TWO problems...The air leak in the w/s wiper motor....and my dd3 will not release until 120 pounds ,and of course applying pressure to the brake pedal 'after' the button is pushed...good idea to have somebody with good ears to check for air leaks everywhere when the engine is shut off....be sure and check the emergency door release...I thought my w/s wipers were leaking & it was the emergency door release..(KIDS)

I'd like to reinforce TD's comment about good ears.

Similar problem on my Dad's Prevost. It was a leaking sender in the panel by his left hip while sitting in the driver's seat.

We fired the beast up and were standing side by side outside of the driver's side window. The leak could be clearly heard - by me, that is!

I asked my Dad three times "Don't you hear that leak" and it was simply in the range of his hearing loss.

I dont know much about a Eagle air system , But I think all duel air systems are close to the same. If you have 2 gauges or 1 with both in the same red and green needles . One should go to the main tank the other to one of the other tanks that works the brakes. Both should go up to 120. I dont know why Eagle would not be the same as most truck and buses.
The dd3 release locking ring in the brake chamber has a small O ring if its bad the lock will not release. The valve that sends air to the parking /emergancy side of the brake can could be bad.
Your bus should build up air at idle and easly stay that way you should beable to push in the brake relase valve and it should stay in you should not have to hold it in. If you start loseing air then you brake cans have leaks.
I would use shop air and plug it in to the wet tank the same tank that the compressor send air to.
Then you can have your motor off and hear all your air leaks.
You have 3 air lines going to the dd3 .
When parked you will have air going to 1 of them easy to check losen the line and air will come out and no air on the other 2.

When you push in the release the air on the one that had air must have no air now and air will now go the the release air line and needs to stay on.

The 3rd line will put air to the brake can when you use the foot valve to stop.

If itn not working like this you have problems and will need to go under and find out what is not working.
Block up your coach block the wheels do you dont kill your self and look out for the high PSI in the air line done take them off all the way just some to check for air.

ALSO....it sounds like it might be time to take your "d-2 air governer" off & wash it down with liquid wrench & replace any cracked 'o' rings...it's on the side of your compressor ,looks like a little box with a rocket ship comeing out of the side....take it off...put newspaper on the kitchen table & take it apart "&" put it back together EXACTLY like you took it apart...

about the good ears...find a little kid & tell him you will give him a dollar if he will show you where the air leak is coming from....be SURE and look at the emergency door release FIRST...it should have the knob pointing toward the door...EAGLES RULE ! !

I feel that one of the first things you need to do is regulate your air pressure settings. 140 lbs is really high for the system. Try 125 and see if that helps, and the governor should not kick in 'til air drops to about 80 lbs., not at 100. Why mess with rebuilding a worn governor, when you can buy a new one for $15.00? Check your manual. ...JJ

A friend of mine has the DD3's and he has to step on the brake pedal a few times to reduce the air pressure before he applies the DD3's. If he reduces the air pressure he has no problem to get them to release later. It appears that you put them on with 120lbs you need at least 120lbs to release them. just a thought. Bill

In what year did they stop making Eagles with the mechanical parking brake?

I do not think an 81 Eagle has DD-3's. On my 80 all I had to do was push the red button to release. Never had to step on the brake pedal. (Spring Brakes?).

On my 85 Model 10 stepping on the Brakes Is the only way that you can get It to release, there Is a place In the manual that tells you to make full application of the brakes to get It to release, It also has spring Breaks. also both my air preasure gauges go up to 120 LBS.

if you have to apply pressure to pedal...you have dd3...if you just push the button and they release ...you have spring brakes....BRAKES...

BRAKES.....BRAKES.......BRAKES........

There's spring brakes, DD-3s and MiniMax, besides the Johnson Bar. I think that DD-3s and the MiniMax both release the same way, with a full application of treadle pressure, don't they?
