Interested to know just what everyone thinks are the worst hills to travel in North America. I know there is Mount Eagle and Fancy Gap in the East, Three Sisters & Cabbage, Grape Vine, Tehachapi & Baker Grade,Powder River Pass, Pipestone & Look out and many that I don't know the names of in the Canadian Rockies. Just curious, what do you think?

Besides the Grapevine on I-5, Tehachapi on US-58, and Baker Grade on I-15 in CA, I'd include I-80 over Donner Summit between Sacramento & Reno (70 miles of 4, 5 & 6% grades), US-50 between Sacramento & Lake Tahoe over Echo Summit (similar, but more two-lane), Hiway 17 between Los Gatos & Santa Cruz (some 7% w/ very nasty banking on some curves), Hiway 299 between Redding and Eureka, and I-5 thru the Siskiyous in N CA.

And then of course, all those hills in San Francisco!! :-)

I know there is some hills around Napa Valley Ca. Was too steep to go up with my Semi when I used to haul wine not a power problem would just spin the wheels . So if you see a sign the says trucks not recomended it should say trucks can't make it. There is also one there that has a max truck speed of 15 mpg And I beleave its over 15% grade.
So I would be carful when hopping from winery to winery over there.

I dont think there is a interstate I would worry about its the 2 lane roads.
Just exiting the hwy in some states there is some real steep roads with no turn around even for a bus for 15 miles or more.

Hwy 140 going east of Lake View Oregon is one I would not take any thing on that did not have 100% good working brakes lots of long steep 9% grades.

cabbage has to be THE WORST....the thing about the grapevine and I-70 west of Denver are ,halfway down...you get the idea you are at the bottom, and put it in high gear , & you are STILL going down a dangerous hill...(I-70 DOES have a sign that says: "hey it's not over yet"

Santa Rosalita, Baja Sur, Mex H-1, 2 lane, 11%, turns, 8 miles, no shoulders, no guardrales, and the last 300 yds. is 13% This is one that some people have to "plan" getting up it. Makes an 8v71 beg for mercy.

There are plenty of hills in the country with OMG percent grades... but I'd just about have to bet that Baker Grade in California is the most heavily traveled stretch of grade in the country.

I can recommend a pair of books titled "Mountain Directory East" and "Mountain Directory West." We carry these in our cockpit. They list all the major grades, with detailed information such as where the runaway ramps are, specific grade/distance information, major curves, etc.

Any time we find ourselves with a steep grade ahead, we consult the directory.

On several trips to Lake Powell I had a heck of a time getting up the hill on Hwy 59 out of Hurricane Utah, in my stick and staples pulling our boat. I always time the return so we head down the hill about 3:00 AM. There is a stop sign at the bottom of the hill and I have yet to make that stop. I think the air brakes and the jakes on the 4104 should make that stop on the next trip.

main thing to remember going downhill...go slow...most steep grades tell the trucks 25 mph , just get in the right lane & put your flashers on....

We have a short (2 mile) steep (7%) 4 lane grade here in SW Oregon on 199 South of Grants Pass called Hayes Hill. It is a sneaky devil because it is straight and cool except for a couple of turns which are posted at 45mph. Should be 35.

Anyway, you hit the turns a little bit too fast and if there is any ice on the pavement, off the road you goes in an instant. No time to correct. But is is cool to ride the Jake all the way down. Thanks.

How about...

Boundary Rd hill in Vancouver, BC. 10% for about 1/2 mile, includes a couple 'S' turns and a stoplight at the bottom of the hill.

"Snowshed Hill" on the Coquihalla highway (Highway 5), BC. 8% for a couple of miles and then 6% for another few miles, including a blind corner at the bottom of the 8% stretch. **CHAINS REQUIRED IN WINTER IN BAD WEATHER, OR YOU'RE NOT GOING UP THE HILL**

Rogers Pass, BC. Between Feild, BC, and (Approximatly) Revelstoke, BC, is the one lane each direction Trans-Canada highway. Narrow, twisty, and very very hilly. Includes a steep downgrade (I forgot the percentage) with a SHARP 40MPH 90° corner at the bottom.

Coming into Golden is a series of cliff roads carved into the side of the mountain with 15MPH corners and many steep downhill grades.

On Quadra island, off Vancouver Island, is a road that leads to a little, out of the way beach... It's got three (if I remember correctly) 180° switchbacks, and the sign says 19%.

Safe travels.

My driveway is 300 feet long and goes up 80 feet. That is about 26%. Does that count?

It makes me double check everything when I work on the brakes.

Two Dogs;

JTNG must have been at the wrong beach if he says the "mounds" in Florida ain't so nice.

Or maybe he was at the right beach.

I don't know which scares me more.

Hwy's 55 & 95 in Idaho have a bunch of steep and narrow pulls between boise and bonners ferry. Two newer four lane sections that are 7% for 7 miles.

Very scenic drive that we used to call the goat trail. Also the only north south hwy.

Don't travel down Hwy 138 around the Mountain Top Area CA. I thought I would save some time Coming from Bakers Field to San Bernadino. There was a sign that looked like 7% down grade. It looked kind of funny because the number 7 was a little too far to the right. That is because some bone head erased the number one. Trying to be funny. It was really 17%! By the time I knew what it really was,TOO Late! I was already over the hump.An old highway. Two dinky lanes with shear drops on the right side about four feet away. Went Down in 2nd gear along with braking every few minutes. Huge stream of cussing, honking cars behind me all the way down. I have navigated many steep grades across the country, but Never like this.By the time I ran into Interstate 15, my hair was 10 shades whiter. Only my son and myself were on this trip coming back from Oregon. Thank God my wife stayed home or it would have been better for me to just jump off those mountains. This was the first time she did'nt go with me. Once bite, twice shy.

Hey, Ron

I know the road you are talking about! I also went that way late one afternoon, we passed several closed ski lodges on a very tight and narrow road (repaved, by the way). By the time I got to the top I thought I was in an airplane! Very impressive sights, but we had enough and didn't know how it was coming down the other end (and it was getting dark) so we turned around and went back down.
