I am looking to find out where or who can make a custom/welded hitch for my 4905. I am in Gainesville Florida so I wouldn't want to go too far. Please let me know if you have had this done, or if you know someone reliable, a welder maybe that can do this, we can show him pics of what is needed. Help us find a good hitch man, don't wanna be losing the trailer. Thanks, Lin

Two Dogs,
Please quit spreading this CRAP that a hitch'll have to be welded to the engine cradle. By starting out with an 18" long reciever tube, a 6 foot length of 3"X 3"x1/2" angle iron and about 18" of 2" X 1/4" square tube and a couple of feet of 2 1/2"X 1/2"bar stock, 4ea. 6" long 1/2" bolts and 6ea. 2"X 1/2" bolts with nuts and lockwashers & some welding rod. I fabricated a bolt on hitch. It bolts to the plate under the rear bumper and clamps to the diagonal braces of the cradle. NO welding to the cradle or any part of the bus. I've towed a 7500 pound GTW trailer about 10,000 miles full and another 7500 with the trailer empty (still 3500 pounds). It simply works great!

Give me a call... 863/559-9067

I'm in Lakeland about 2 hours south of Gainesville. Have made a custom hitch for an Eagle that worked out pretty good so figure this can be done as well. Time to make it was about 3 hours from start to finish!

Can I ask a dumb question here?

A LOT of these rear engine buses were set up with a big overhead AC unit over the engine weighing 500+lbs. And a lot of us are dropping those.

It seems to me that any mount strong enough to hold that AC can be used as a "secondary reinforcement point" for the hitch if the AC is gone.

So for example...weld up a "cradle" that bolts to the stock AC mount locations and pokes out the back of the rear cap about 6", and ends in heavy rings. Then when hitched up to something heavy, use strong "winch type" tie-down straps to take up about 300lbs of the hitch weight or more onto the upper cradle and off of the lower mount. This would all be "in addition" to the regular mount system, not "in place of"!

Thoughts?

I would think that support was designed for downward loading,
not rearward yanking.. There isn't all that much of a frame up there,
really..

As an aside for my own quest:

Has anyone towed a car behind a bus using the bus bumper
as the hitch point? It's awfully thick, strong and well secured to
the chassis... ??
