My radiators in my mc9 are cooled with two large fans . do they still use this method for a new bus or have they gone electric. just a curious note

New bus's use a system like Prevost uses. The rad is mounted on the side (drivers side) and is run off the engine with a right angle drive box. Electric fans won't do the job...but hydraulic fans would.

Most new buses and are like the older GMC's are.
The rad is in the lower left side.
Some are driven buy a hyd motor.
The GMC's was driven off the front of the motor.
There are some MCI"s converted to the newer style 1 rad on the lower left.
I guess GMC had the right Idea 50 years ago :-)

A side mounted radiator is not 'the right idea' just because of its position.

It is the result of optimizing a bunch of choices - all factors of criteria besides simple position.

I'm planning on doing a re-engine and I've been instructed to make a model which will be examined in a University wind tunnel.

The only thing lacking (within the limits of my techical skill) will be a rolling floor for the ground plane.

Keep in mind that anyone can elimiate cooling problems by pirating the radiator from a large tracked farm implement, but the size, weight and horsepower necessary to take advantage of its capacity reaches diminishing returns very quickly, if ever.

Yes, such a radiator will cool an engine, but it's kinda like putting your house on wheels rather than converting a bus, IYKWIM

I'll try some add ons like full-width flaps as well.

Hello David...my best guess (as I do not know) is that the fans are still belt or hydralic in nature and do not use electric fans as the prime cooler.

It is a matter of the energy required to push/pull enough air thru the radiator to cool the mill going up a very steep hill very slow on a very hot day.

Yeah, the problem is that just crusing down the hiway nice and easy, little cooling is necessary as the engine is hardly working. At 65 mph I use about one half power in my Crown.

But...going up a steep hill with a reduced road speed flat wide open, the engine is working at 100% and requires lots of cooling air thru the radiator. My bus has two large belts. They must be...

....tranferring about 20 hp off the mill to turn that big fan. And Marc is right---the best place for a radiator is where the big trucks have theirs---right in the front. Good luck.
