I'm a newbie, going from airplanes to BCs for a change of scenery. I've seen some references to older GMC buses with steering column manual shifters. Did this really happen? If so are any of these still in operation and how well do/did they operate. It sounds like kind of a neat idea if it actually works ok. Thanks, gusc |

Works great, I love em, just get any old GMC silversides, they use column shifts. Got a drivers window that rolls up and down too! |

I didn't know that....interisting... Hey, gusc....Don & I are both pilots...and there are many more on this board....I think it has something to do with craftsmanship...Buses are hand made...like airplanes |

I've got one in my 47.Operate fine, with alittle practice.Drove it coast to coast 2 summers ago.Whats really neat is you have to push button on dash and shift into second in order to back up.Silversides are the only bus that I know with column shift. And the passenger\entry door also rolls up and down.Have fun and God bless |

Thanks Guys, I really wasn't sure I was reading what I was reading!! Sounds like a neat setup to me, it must be a long throw between gears? I just happen to be considering a Silverside now and the owner says it is a 5sp Spicer. Did any column shifters have 5sp? Maybe he is counting Reverse as a speed, I am going to ask him. I haven't asked him if it is a column shift because I didn't know they existed when I wrote to him. I am selling my Navion Rangemaster because I had a few problems passing my last flight physical and will use the bus to make the long trips we used to make in the RM. I'll get a small plane and shift my license to the Sport Pilot category, no more physicals. There is no way I'm giving up flying even if I have to get an ultralight. |

Hey Gus, Another Gus here. I also owned an old Navion, not the range master though, and loved the old bird, but the cost of maint. finally forced me to sell her. Like you, my physical capabilities do severly limit my flying, but I still own a super cub, with skis and floats. My grandson puts most of the hours on it now, but I still manage to get in a few hours. Hope you find the bus of your dreams. Gus Haag |

gusc, If you did not fail your last flight physical you will be fine for the sport pilot/no medical. If you failed (reported to FAA) you can not legaly fly sport pilot. If you think you will fail a class 3 medical don't take it! The weird thing about the new sport pilot is as long as you received your last applied for medical or special issuance medical you qualify to self certify your medical condition and fly using any states current drivers license. The same is true if you never had a medical. I have always said all pilots are only a medical away from an ultralight. Not a terrible thing, I started my flying with an ultralight over 20 years ago. Best of luck. |

Hi Other Gus, Super Cubs are among my favorites, I learned to fly in the Army version, the L-21 with 125hp. It is a great machine. I am shocked at SC prices today. The second plane I flew was a canopy Navion, an L-17 205. Great airplane and I always wanted one. The reason I got a RM is because we make very long trips and it has an easy 1000nm range. Also the rear step and baggage door are very nice. I keep it on my farm and do all my own maintence, otherwise I couldn't afford it! I plan to get a Taylorcraft since it falls into the Sport Plane category. Now I'm ready for an old GMC bus. Philris, I passed this last physical but don't want to take a chance on the next one, involves heart valves. I cast no dispersions on ultralights, I have always liked them. I like anything that flies! I fly the Navion out of my pasture so an ultralight would be great. I've always liked Taylorcrafts too. My problem is I like them all, especially taildraggers, because they are so much fun on grass. |

Don/TX and 2 Dogs, Thanks for responses. I think it's just that we want to be a little different. I always loved Greyhound buses because I spent so much time on them in the '40s and '50s as a young sailor, they always took me home to my sweetie. Commercial motorhomes don't interest me a bit, no character. Don, where in TX, I'm in north Arkansas? |

How much for the Rangemaster? Year? eng./prop SMOH? DH? I want another Helio, but can't afford one now, so maybe a Navion huh? Kinda like my Aero Commander (single), but more panache! ...JJ |

Gusc, where in N Arkansas. I am in the far south of Texas, near Harlingen, a town called La Feria. I spent several weeks in Belle Vista, NW Ark last summer, you close to there? |

Don, Little town called Ash Flat, about 25 mi from MO. Bella Vista is 200 mi west of me. Do you have a Silverside? Do you recommend a bus without air bags or with and why? |
