Cory, or anyone else in the northern Illinois area. While traveling to Illinois for my visit to the cancer clinic, I was dozeing, with my wife driving, she pulled into the standard 40 cent car lane, when she was franticaly digging for more quarters, the sign read toll now $1.00. My question is, did all catagories of vehicle go up in proportion, or just four wheelers?

Thanks Gus Haag

Gus, I live near Rockford IL and what they did was double the cost of tolls for folks who do not have an I-Pass. That's one of those RF ID boxes that automatically pays the toll when you drive under an antenna.

The idea is to help the flow of traffic by keeping things moving at the toll booths. You would think it would make more sense to do what other states have done, give you a ticket when you get on the tollway and then pay once you get off, never having to stop or slow down at a toll booth.

So, if any of you plan on a visit to Illinois, be prepared to pay 40 or 50 cents per axle, or shell out $50 ($10 for the box and $40 worth of toll credits) for an I-Pass.....and enjoy your stay (and fleecing) in wonderful ILLINOIS!!!!

Yes all the tolls in Illinois went up. I live Northwest of Chicago and the toll on 294 at the Waukegan Rd. plaza WAS $ 1.35 for a bus/motorhome , NOW it cost (sit down ) $ 4.25. Unless you travel at something like midnight to 6 AM. Then its only $ 3.30. If anyone is interested in toll rates for Illinois they can be found on line at http://www.illinoistollway.com/portal/page?_pageid=53,35497,53_35524&_dad=portal&_schema=P ORTAL
they also can be downloaded in PDF format at the same web page

This has been long and upcoming. It's all pushed by the IPASS.

IPASS was first available for cars, and recently for trucks. Both have lanes just for IPASS and the manual lanes for cars also accept the IPASS.

The beleif is they will move traffic faster if you have IPASS, too bad they can't clear up the STOP'n GO in the city caused by lousy highway design by IDOT and just BAD DRIVERS.

So, in an effort to get everyone on IPASS, they held the price for IPASS and doubled all the manual tolls.

One problem they did not think of was the cars that have the windshield coated with that shiney film cannot be read by the IPASS so they get the penalty anyway, unless they hold it out the window as they scream by the IPASS LANE.

I think there is a legality problem with what they are doing. They are not providing equal opportunity for travel to everyone, and now they know IPASS does not work for everyone.

But I have the IPASS from when I had to commute to the Slave Dungeon, called "OFFICE".

Sorry to hear about your being sick. I sincerely hope all works out well for you.

Billy, Mike and Cory,

Thanks for the information. Another fine example of your tax dollars at work.

Here in Canada the toll roads are monitored by cameras they take a picture of your licence plate or you can carry a transponder it monitors you access on and off and the toll is measured by distance travelled . Billing is done monthly and it can be quite expensive. The benefit though is for those that do not live in the province or if they are from out of the country there is no charge to use the highway . This is quite fair practice because it should not be their responsibility to pay for something that is not for their full time benefit.Just my opinion.

(" heard all the trucks are using route 41 to go up to Milwaukee if that helps is a little slower ")

NO, the trucks will use either 41 or 94, depending on traffic, "smokies" or if the weigh stations are open. However, just before the IL/WI state line, 94 will merge into 41, and will run together until Milwaukee where 41 will split off to go North as 94 turns West on the city North side toward Madison.

Coming North, From the Lake Forest plaza, there usually is a clear path, again, because people drive dumb, zig zag and cause accidents or just force drivers to slow to a crawl, 94 North can become bumper to bumper.

41 is just busy but usually flows pretty well. It does have some stop lights, Lake Forest, Great Lakes, North Chicago, Park City, Waukegan, Rt21, Rt173. you get the picture?

Going South, the truckers are on that CB at all times, checking out the traffic (mostly) and "smokies".

Depending on traffic (very dependant on "TIME OF DAY") will tell you if you can go the 41/94 route or turn to take the 294 bypass. ( the route I used to commute ). The 41/94 route through Chicago, during rush hours, is usually stop and go, bumper to bumper. IDOT tried to correct some of the problem the last rebuild of the highway, but they built some more "bonehead" turns, 2to1 lanes and such and it didn't help a bit.

the 294 bypass can also become stop and go during rush hours and is quite a pain in the butt. Even when you are not traveling in rush hour, it can be quite busy. I have never had a big problem with the "smokies" on either 41 or 94.

294 bypass has some "Oasis" areas for fuel, food and bathrooms, used to have a choice between Burger King, Wendys and McDonalds, but the new rebuild of the Oasis units will all be McDonalds and their not so healthy fast foods.

A bit further West is 355. It can be a better choice, if it fits your travel plan, but drive the double nickle. These highways are patrolled by HARDBUTT cops and they pull you over for ANY reason. They make the city richer through tickets and ALWAYS get there man.

If the traffic is flowing 70, they will just take their pick and pull you over. If you argue that you were following the "flow of traffic" as the driving manual instructs, they will just say you were driving over 55, and then promptly write you a ticket.

I think the 294 bypass is your best bet, but with no traffic considerations, will take you an additional hour to get around Chicago where 41/94 will be less that hour to get through.

If you break-down south of the city, stay on the highway and in your vehicle. You are in bad territory and don't want to be caught off the highway.

We watched a car "disassemble itself" over a period of a few days. If it were not so sad, it would have been funny.
