Are there any special tools needed to run the rack on a DD two stroke? Friend of a friend says he knows how but doesn't have the special tools needed. If he is correct what special tools are needed and how much (approx) would they cost. If not to bad I would buy them just to have and maybe learn how to do if myself. Don't want to hear all the horror stories I think I am capable but have never seen the inside of a DD. Thanks Rick 74 MC-8 |

yep... you need a timing pin... and a 5/16th and 9/16 open end wrench... plus necessary feeler gage to set valves... cost??? around $10 or so for the timing pin... but here's more to just setting valves and injectors... you need to make governor and syncronization adjustments also... there'll be several that tell you its unnecessary...but if you do it right...............this is not a job for someone that is not famaliar with a 2-stroke....you have lots to loose if its done wrong.... |

Not doubting anyone I'm just trying to figure out if this guy knows what he is talking about. He claims while working at his old shop he worked on 2 strokes all the time But he doesn't have the special tools needed (the old shop had them) I figured the so called special tools were just some kind of locating tool or something simple. I don't think I will let him touch my coach Rich 74 MC-8 |

Just my two cents (I'm going to get slamed for this). I had the head off my 671 when I put it back on the rack had to be readjusted and gov reset. I played with it but wasn't familiar with it and everyone here told me how ticky it was so I took it to a shop near me and helped the guy do it. I felt like an idiot anyone with a little mechanical ability can set the rack on mine and set the gov in their sleep as long as you've got the directions in the book. You have to have the timming pin to time the injectors, feeler gauge to set valves(same as in any engine) a couple wrenches and a screw driver for the gov. No big deal. Also bring your patients it takes time to do the rack right. Each time to adjust one you much go back through each one you've done and make sure you haven't messed them up. If the guy your going to get to help you had done it before once you see it once you'll have no trouble. |

rick there are a lot of very good mech. out there that do not have the adjusting pin that they need to adjust a 2- stroke gm, as you need different pin for different injectors and many shops prefer to supply them and the guys do not buy them to just to have them in their tool box, they are a special tool and if they had all the specials they need for all the different engines they would have a shop full of tool boxes. |
