Well, I took the coach into a local bus repar facility. They said no adjust ment left on torsion bars on one side and 5% on the other side. They estimated 150 hrs @ $80/hr for installation of torsion bars. That's 12K for labor + the parts. My question is this... If the torsion bars are fine and there is no adjustment left, can't they turn the bols somehow? I doubt every one of the torsion bars is bad as it drives awesome. Any suggestions? I'm going to contact jefferson bus today and also Luke. |

The torsion bars can be re-indexed, if they are in good condition. Also Jefferson may have longer adjustment bolts available for minor adjustments. I don't remember if Norris at Jefferson told me this or if it was someone else. Or just about any good machine shop could fab- ricate longer adjustment bolts. Goodluck! Catskinner! I had my bogies re-indexed many years ago. I do not remember the cost, but it was just a few hours labor. As I recall, Remove the wheels, remove the adjuster, pull out the torsion bar and turn it one slot and re-install. Something like a drive shaft spline IIRC. Richard |

Richard, He is out of thread on the drives. At least that is the idea I get from his pictures in his previous post farther down the board. David |

I am taking it to a place in Alliance, Ohio this weekend. A guy there was referenced by Norris at Jefferson. The name is Buddy and he used to work for Eagle. Buddy said they will look at it and hopefully they will have enough knowledge about my girl... I'll keep you posted. Thanks |

When you re-index the spline of the bogie, you start out with full adjustment again. The torsion bar must be removed from the splined socket and turned one notch. about 30 degrees IIRC. Richard |

Just got back from Alliance Ohio this evening. Former Eagle mechanic worked on the bus all day. Good news, all torsion bars are good and the drivers side drive-axle bar only needs adjusted. I was glad to hear it. I will pick her up next weekend and keep you posted. Bus weighed in at 32,000 lbs without water tank. Bogie passenger was 2500 lb and drivers was 3000lb. I'll keep you posted. Thanks |

JJrsmp. I checked my eagle manual and each bogie should carry 15% of the load. 32000 X.15 =4800 per bogie on your application. You need to reindex each side. Looks like driver's side needs at least 3 splines and passenger needs 4 splines. Each spline is 500 lbs. That seems like a lot. My coach only needed 2 splines each side and I'm at 36K lbs wet on a converted coach. Talk it over with your mechanic and take a look at the shop manual together. David |

Good point. He used the guage on the jack for each bogie after leveling the coach. We read 1300psi for passenger(2600 lbs) and then 15--psi for drivers(3000 lbs). This is before adjusting the drivers side rear torsion bar. I saw a section of the manual which states "each bogie wheel carries about 11% of the total coach weight"). I also saw the 15% statement. Anyways, 11% of 32K is 3520 lbs. So I see 1 spline for drivers and 2 splines passenger? I'll talk with the mechanic on Monday. I'll keep you posted. Thanks |

Also, I assume the weight on the bogies will change after adjusting the torsion bar, correct? |

jjrsmp, You're right about that 11% and 15% discrepency. There is a picture diagram that shows the wheel loadings with percentages. They add to 100%. Without going out and rereading the book, I think I used the 15% scale because the diagram added up to 100% coach weight. Keep in mind that when you increase the load on the bogies the drives will lighten and the front (a small amount) I don't remember if you told us if you are converted or empty???? At 32K lbs, I assume empty. All this will change when you convert. In my coach for example, I have my genny in the front bay. So extra weight on the front, but about 700lbs below front GAWR as per mfg data plate. You can tinker with this now, but I'd just get it up to ride height, do the conversion, then do it again. Watch and learn. You can do it yourself next time. It's grunt work and tedious, but can be done on your own. David Anderson |
