I have an extra 24 volt alternator that is pulley driven. what do you guys think about running it off of my drive shaft for my ac ? It is brushless and a rebiuld. I would like to use it for my house batteries. It puts out voltage acording to how fast it is turned so may not produce 24v so may be perfect for house bats. if it turns fast enuff for 24+ volts it could be used as a backup for the one I'm getting fixed now. plus still do the house stuff. What do you think? |

The problem would not be HP as the drive probably sends 30 Hp to the compressor at times. The hassle would would be the drive speed is reduced from engine speed ,yet the usual alternator takes good RPM to have a large output. Some style step up , Belts? gear box? might be needed to make it worthwhile for big AMP's output. FAST FRED |

it'll work great..... i have an old 4104 that has a 8v71 and 4 speeed transmisson in it... the engine and tranns are out of 4107, 4905,or a 4903... can't tell exactly... but the small alternator i have is mounted right above the angle drive on the fan drive...fabricated brackets and short belts... its only a 85 amp, and its 12 volt, but it will keep the coach starting/lights batteries plenty charged...pulley that is bolted to the drive is about 7" in dia... and the alt pulley is about 3".... check rotation, make sure the fan on the alternator is turning the correct rotation...as an alternator will charge either way, but a generator is directional.. |

If I recall correctly, you have a GMC 4905. I ran two extra alternators, used the AC output shaft to run a 24v one wire, internally regulated Delco, its sole job was to keep the engine batteries up to par. Alternators turn out amps at a low rpm, but I used about a 7 incl pulley that was already there to drive the stock automotive pulley on the alternator. I hung another 12v one on the "extra" pulley on the engine for the low useage 12v system. Both were trouble free easy installations. For peace of mind, it was comforting to know that if I ever had an alternator or regulator problem with that big oil cooled sucker, a common jumper cable would allow me to complete my trip without trusting it to some clod in Podunk City who had never seen one of them before. I love redundant systems!(and have never been towed!!) |

After shelling out $740 dollars today on repairs at the diesel shop, fuel pump, compressor, labor and finding out after replacing the drive gear on the alternator I bought off this board from some thief. It still does not work. so I guess any other alternator I put on won't be an extra or spare. |

Ron, we put one on Charlie C's 4106, and it is now the only one working. A Chrysler marine single wire type. We used a 6 inch pulley on the AC shaft and left the stock one on the alternator. The 6 in. pulley helps keep the rpm up. Build a drip shield over top of it, because of the radiator hoses that are above it. ...JJ |

I have a 38v condensor fan drive generator on my 6V71. I was planning on using it for charging the house batts until I discovered the voltage. Are all GMC coaches with Detroits set up like this? I have a transit, so are the highway coaches using this 38v genny as well? Is this the locatation some of you are mounting the aux. alt\generators? Vin 73 GMC T6H4523A |
