Anyone know the real facts on Cold Cathode Fluorescent 12 vdc lighting.
If I understand the vague specifications behind claims by the few manufactures that are begining to market them for RV/Marine use, these are very durable, DOUBLE the light for the SAME power as tube or compact flouresent lights and far more durable as far as surge/vibration and life span. They will accept a dimmer (for lower lighting levels and reduced power consumption ).
Would like to here any experience in the RV lighting applications as well any more information links.
This lighting technology may have potential for our conversions coaches some day as the selection of ready to use products become more available for RV and the price drops. (maybe some budding enterpanur that reads this would like to do the lamp & ficture manufacturing, component assembly and marketing or find someone in China to do it for them, the electronic components are very cheap as they are used in many other applications for a many years now)

Hey TruthHunter
I held back my comments as I have only studied the Cold Cathode lamps, never really using one.

My Cold Cathode info came from West Marine, they have a nifty info page describing them.

My take on them is they are very tough lamps and hold up well. The bulbs are long lasting and the lamps are prohibitively expensive.

I recently was involved in a re-lighting project in an RV where we used Thin Lite Florescents model
171, 172 and 174.

these are rather unique and very nice lamps.

The 171 is 8W/400 lumins, 17" long, 2 1/2"w, 1"h
The 173 is 13w/850 lumins, 26" long, 2 1/2"w, 1"h
The 172 is 16w/800 lumin, 29" long, 2 1/2"w, 1" h
The 174 is 26w/1700 lumin, 47" long, 2 1/2"w, 1"h

We used the 171, 172 and 174.

The 171 would be excellant for under counter
The 172 and 174 were used as a indirect lighting effect. I think they should have used the 171 and 173 for this affect because, even though the 172 and 174 were indirect, they are bright enough to light the RV with no other lighting needed.

These are very nice lights and, due to their size, can be placed in very tight locations and still put out a lot of light.

Just thought I would mention it....
