I purchased an IHC S1700 school bus 2 years ago, 7.3 L, 5 sp manual, diesel. I have 2 questions. 1) Does anyone know where I might locate a used disc brake caliper for it? Also, I have a hard time getting it up to 50 mph, and I was wondering how to determine if the speed is governed, and how to disable it, if it is? btw, it has 90,000 miles, and starts easily, and does not smoke. |

would imagine it IS goverened...a diesel shop could turn it up a bit...but...school buses are not really geared for the highway & don't have enough power to make it practical to change rear-end gears..AND...new gears are 2000.00 |

have the goverer turned up and put a Banks system on it. that will over come any power trouble you may have pretty well. |

That NA 7.3 IDI should run 65 easily, unless the axle ratio is something like 6.14:1 (which it might well be). What RPM is it turning at 50 in high gear? IIRC, the 7.3 IDI is governed around 2800-3000RPM in Internationals. New gears might be $2000, but a take-out rear axle from a highway-geared truck isn't. My B-700 has probably been regeared, since most gas-engine Ford schoolies I've seen top out around 60-62MPH. Mine will run 70 (I cruise at 65), & isn't even spinning 3000RPM. I have a rebuilt 460 with ~350HP, but even a stock 180-200HP 370 should have enough power for 60-65MPH. As for the brake caliper, check a heavy truck junkyard...but I suggest just getting rebuilt calipers, rather than using one from a junkyard. If you want more power, I suggest an ATS turbo. I have one on my 7.3-powered 1992 Ford F-350, & it's untouched with 360,000 hard miles. |

Thanks for all the suggestions. I don't know what the RPMs are since there is no guage. I might just try adjusting a screw on the throttle linkage where it connects to a device (injector pump?) and see if that makes a noticable difference. Since I am only using the bus to move my belongings from NJ to TN I don't want to invest any more than the $1600 I paid for it. I will most likely sell it when I am done with it. I did get a rebuilt caliper, replaced the old one, and bled it, but I think it needs the other side bled as well. |
