are you sure about the 400hp rating? i never heard of 8v92 @ that rating. the old (green one's , non turbo, were 430hp. the later silver's came in @445hp and up to 475 stock.

Bob, It will depend on a few things. do you have california engine or a federal engine.do you have a T or TA engine. See if the data plate is still on the valve cover. you need to know what the liner port size is,what camshafts and turbo you have. You need the engine serial # to know for sure how far you can go.The other question is what coach do you have and can you keep the engine cool with more horse power.

Weren't the non-turbo engines rated at about 400HP. Also 1990 DDEC are rated low because for that one year mfgers were required to rate them with number one fuel. With number two add about 30-40hp

I will check the data plate. I'm just going by the work order of the outfit that installed it.
I just bought it it's a 1979 Prevoast that came out with a 8V71. It was repowered about 4 years ago.

The engine information on the valve cover is not reliable-- you need to pull off a valve cover and get the letter/number off the injector tag. This won't answer everything, but it will help a lot.

Does the work order have the model and serial numbers on it. while you do need to know what injectors you have you also need to know the other things I asked about.
You have to know where your starting from to know where you are going. You can't put tons more fuel in the engine with out increasing the air flow.
If the data plate is on the valve cover, match it against the model and serial numbers. If they are not there they are on either the right rear of the block between the air box doors or on the newer engines on a pad at the right front of the engine block just behind the water pump.
If you have a 400 horse engine out of a truck it could very well be a 405hp, they were very common in the late 70 to mid 80.

Gary, The 8V92N engines like all the rest came in a varity of power ranges. I have seen them as low as 325hp and as high as 430hp. Most of these engine are industrial power units.
