1956 Scenicruiser,,8-71 detroit, recently rebuilt alt thats been perfect.
Ok...those who know me might think i had a buzz on but i assure you i was sober..
i was cleaning all the wires to and from the batteries..into the starter..till i could see no more..
went to the batteries..pulled the batteries..took off the wires inside and to the batterie itself..in putting them back in and hooking them up..i hooked the batteries up backwards..i have a positive ground bus, 8-71. i hit the starter switch and heard a clunk..ran back and threw the main off.
i have fully recharged the batteries..
the bus started after some coaxing..and i watched as the red low air light faded to nothing and it totally killed the batteries. i have a dead short. within about 3 mins it was dead..not enough time tho to cut the skinner valve but dead non the less.
Q. how do i go about tracking this dead short down. the voltage reg is ok..starter started the bus..alt didnt seem to be charging and when you throw the main on...you hear a loud matalic clunk comming from the engine.
before i have it towed for a cost of about 800.00 i thought id come here
emial me direct if you want it might be easier

Take off the terminal marked battery on the alternator (that's the larger wire that goes to the battery - sounds like you shorted the diodes in the alternator -
charge the batteries with and external charger and start her up -

This could have been worse. Tracing wires for days on a bus would NOT be fun.

Get an Ohmmeter and check the diodes. One way they will look like they are open and the other way they will look like there is some resistance there.

The other option is to do the preventitive type fix. Replace all the diodes at this time and KNOW what their condition is. The ones that look OK now may have been damaged to the point that some time from now they will fail.

Note: most diodes will fail shorted. It's just the way these things happen.
