Ok guys: the next chapter of the bus is in Austin, TX.The seller was able to free up the seized injector and the motor runs great. Jim has suggested to me to still fix the rack and replace all of the injectors anyway. My wife and I have made the decision to wait until we get there to decide what needs replacing. My hope is that the bus will make it home to our own mechanic where he can evaluate the motor.

Now the question of the day. Kim and I are flying to Austin next week so we can't take all of the equipment with us.If it was up to you what would you buy on the other end for the 2000 mile trip; ie oil, fluids, what else? Also, any other tips or things to do before we leave for the long dark road? We bought a AAA rv road service just in case.
Thanks in advance.

The pros will chime in with what to take - here's a tip tho - box up the stuff you'd rather have with you and UPS it to yourself for pickup at their location at your destination. I've done this a number of times and it works great.

You're going to pick up a bus you've never seen "in person"?

I would have sold you mine, if you promised not to look before
you handed me the cash...

Two thousand miles in a bus with problems? Dang, I thought I was the only one crazy enough to pull such a stunt. The road service will get you pulled into somewhere, but finding someone to actually repair it along the road can be mighty difficult, and the cost to repair when you find someone can put you into shock as well, as they probably never even seen one like yours, and you will pay for their learning on yours. My vote is to spend some more time checking out its problems BEFORE the trip.

Bring an IR thermometer. If all the cylinders are not running at about the same temperature, hold on to your check and fly back home. Keep an eye on the cylinder temperatures periodically through the trip. Also, keep a close watch on oil level, oil pressure and coolent level.

A bad injector rack could turn your pistons into a molten mass of aluminum.

I learned this through a $7000.00 diesel training course given at the School of Hard Knocks, Toledo, OH, located 500 miles from my home. Good luck!

what the first time purchasers need is somebody that is versed in "busnut'....a city bus....naaa....a schoolbus..naaaa....well they will work for poor people...but they go 55 mph...& the people out on the interstate going 70 get mad..there are a few here that would fly to whatever town...look at the bus & give a report...price negoshable...might cost you 5or 6 hundred a day...but...you would come out ahead in the long run...look at capt. crybaby's "LUCK"...buying the wrong bus...will put you in financial ruin

Isn't this the bus that has stud piloted wheels sloppily bolted on hub piloted type hubs? Surely you aren't going to drive it 2000 miles that way are you? If so, please give us your route of travel so we can be someplace else during your trip. We are just full of discouraging remarks this morning, aren't we?

Should call you 'TwoDogsFuckinShitStirin'.

Have to agree with you on getting some expert advice though (damn).

The Gillig would only climb the Allegany's at 55. Could have gone faster but some 1,000,000 mile old highway bus got in my way.

Finally getting her broke in, hey 2D? :-)
Tony and Kim, I hope you have read all of this. Don't let bus buying fever make you crazy (and stupid). I know it is tough when you want a bus.

2D,

I've seen pictures of you on here. Don't know how fast you are but, the beauty contest is mine!!! Probably should save the beauty contests for the ladies though. We could just crack a cold one and preach the virtues of our of road-going machines.

Yesterday when I was coming home on I-80 at the Vallejo Carquinez Bridge (N. California, for the uninitiated), I saw yet another NJ Transit Eagle broke down in my area. Dirty and ugly, it was being pushed by the three-axle Cal Trans wrecker off the road to the first exit. The time before that a NJ Transit Eagle made it a mile past the Bay Bridge before it broke down. I have yet to see an RTS broken down around here!

i sincerely hope that they prove me wrong and make it to california... first off, i'd take it to a detroit 2 stroke shop....not a general mechanic shop where you'll pay for a tech to learn about busses... then heed their advice, fix the electrical problems you have, replace the tires, wheels, and necessary lugnuts...i'd take it to the nearest truck stop (like the 1 in buda) and get it serviced, brakes adjusted, and get it roadworthy....
