I'm in the middle of replacing the steering wheel so I can move the bus. I have a question about the upper steering column assembly/tube from the knuckle up to the nut. Hopefully, someone has disassembled this and put it all back together. The MCI parts manual shows the following parts, in order from the knuckle up: spacer collar; washer; cup washer; spring; washer, spring retainer; nylon bushing; jacket tube; bearing; contact ring assembly; then an upper bearing; nylon bushing, spring (again) and top nut. My question involves the lower spring, which is missing. Anybody else have direct experience with taking this apart? Is this bottom spring redundant? According to the manual, it is the same parts number as the top. Might anybody who has changed to a tilt column have this upper assembly laying in their shop?...or maybe just the spring? I feel safe in saying that it is very unlikely that the engineer called for a spring in the plans that was redundant... Since there is an identical spring in the column already and I'd venture to say it is not a unique spring and a reasonable replacement shou;d be easy enough to find. Brian |
