When I had the bus painted last year I removed the ladder and had been debating whether to put it or another one back on. Recently instead, I purchased an Xtend and Climb telescoping ladder. It fits easily into a bay, weighs about 30#, and is less than 30" high when collapsed. Aside from that, it is great fun to play with. Check it out if you want a non-attached method to get to the roof. The usual disclaimer: it is not my invention (too bad), I don't own the company (too bad), and have nothing to gain from passing this on. By the way, I think it can only up to 270#, so it is not for everyone.

Lin-

How safe are those? I looked at one in Ace hardware (on sale
for around $100), and although it looked easy to use, I managed
to catch my fingers between the steps as it collapsed. If it were
fully extended... well... I wouldn't be typing this fast now..

I have a folding ladder, much heavier than your type, but always
wanted something lighter and easier to manage. In the store
after the ladder was fully extended, both the fella' and I had
a tough time raising it and lowering it. He suggested that it be
extended and retracted while laying it on it's side.. Kinda'
defeats the purpose.. and it was damned tough to do either
with it on it's side, anyway..

Can you tell me more about it? Maybe we weren't doing
something right?

I have used one of the collapsing types for several years and never had any problem. I really do not understand how you could have caught your fingers in it. I always collapse mine with it in the vertical position, one section at a time.

Richard-

There was a plastic ring at each rung's rail that had to be
twisted to unlock it to collapse it. I had my hands between
the rungs when I twisted them... I guess I should have read
the warning to keep your hands clear and work the devices
with hands behind the ladder.. It was tough though, since
as the device was released, the ladder quickly collapsed
that step and with all the weight of the raised ladder above it.

They had that on sale for $119.00 about a month ago.

BUS RULE #1 - Keep yo fingers away from any potential moving parts.

Sheesh, just when we were thinking you shouldn't be labeled a new guy anymore. Back to square one, no free passes, do not collect $100. :-)

When I first looked at one in a store, I almost got caught. It is tempting to put your hands between the rails rather than around the outside when pushing the release buttons. I have had no problem opening or closing it. When I got it, I showed it off to several guys I know that run machine shops. All had fun playing with it. The truth of the matter is that I bought it more because I enjoyed it than needed it. Anyway, for those that are more accident prone than most, do not operate it unless you are fully clothed. By the way, I did not include a link because they all were venders with prices.

I have a folding ladder I use around the shop and I don't find it "fun" at all! So when I look at the Xtend and Climb ladder it looks like a PIA rather than a toy. Another alternative, a little pricy but easy to put together, is the Beanstock Ladder:

I bought mine at the MAK/Caverns Gathering last year.
