I have a 4106 with a 730 trans, both have been rebuilt about 18,000 miles ago. The problem that I have is that the trans does not shift into third by itself. I have to downshift into second and then back to third and then it will go into gear (air shifter)
The fluid is clean, and it is full. Is this a common problem with these transmissions, or is it something that needs to be looked at by an allison tech.?
Thanks

Call LUKE at Us Coach ,1.888.COACH34 and talk to him.

Usually its a worn plastic part that is cheap ($20,00 or so) and EZ to install yourself.

Jim: Are you saying the tranny does not go into lockup or that it's not shifting into 3rd if this is a V730 tranny? In either case the governor screen may be dirty, that is located on the output end behind a 1/4" pipe plug on the right side. Be carefull when taking the screen out, I use the eraser end of a new pencil. It should shift into lockup at 46 MPH. 1st to 2nd @ 27 MPH 2nd to 3rd @ 36 MPH. The governor located behind a plate W/4 1/4" screws may have a piece of dirt or something in the slide valve within the governor shaft. There are 2 .010 orfices in the valve plate that may cause a problem also, cleanlyness is a must when adding oil to the tranny, takes awhile for new oil to pass thru the filter. It was very important that the right thickness gasket was used on the governor cover also. Hope this may help you.
