I thought some of you broadband-enabled Busnuts might enjoy seeing some historical footage of the beautiful GMC Scenicruser plying the highways of America in an old Greyhound promo feature I found on the Prelinger Archives. Careful if you go to the Archives… there’s some amazing stuff on there and we might not hear from you for days.

The particular film, “Freedom Highway" [ downloads for Part I and Part II] was apparently made for Greyhound in the mid-50’s. The production values are pretty amazing, with aerial shots of the Crusier(s) along various highways and byways. Lots of the action takes place on board the Crusier. Although the interiors were clearly shot on a sound stage, they used rather convincing front-projection landscapes through the windows.

Along the journey, populated by characters straight out of a typical Hollywood screenplay, there’s some “wayback machine” footage covering most of the mythical bases of American History. It’s told in the wide-eyed, Capra-esqe style that sorta personifies the Fifties. I was surprised the film wasn’t done by Jam Handy, who did so many of the GM films (and WWII propaganda pieces).

You’ll see some familiar faces in there, like Disney staple (at least until he was “outed”- gasp) Tommy Kirk, and even a young Angie Dickinson. And let’s not forget the good old cowboy, Tex Ritter crooning about The Alamo.

Between the two movie files, it's about 35 minutes in duration. If you just want to see the bus shots and skip most of the drama, I whittled down the files into a watchable chunk that’s about 6 minutes long. WM9 14MB

Enjoy,

Brian,

Thanks for posting the Internet's 2nd most addictive website known to man (BNO is 1st).

Anyone remember a driver safety film called "Signal 30"? How about some '50s health films....and don't forget some classic stag films. When was the last time you heard that term used? It's like watching a video time capsule.

Stomach muscles haven't recovered yet and my tear ducts have go dry.
