Hi all hey guys The following is a summary that appeared on the Yahoo RTS-Bus-Nuts B/B ............................................. "87 Grumman Flx with a 6V92 DDEC - engine wouldn't start" The engine was just rebilt - new sleeves pistons rings bottom bearings turbo gen 12v - he somewhat knows diesels driving trucks for many years but never had a d/deck system 12 volt generator went bad - he replaced it and now the bus wouln't start. to now make matters worse his wife (married 62 years)has taken seriously ill in ICU in Blyith and he needs to get home please help ................................................. How can he check the "blower drive gear" - I understand that Geoff had his go bad also. I'm not much of a diesel Mechanic but if it doesn't "pop" a few times on either - maybe it's the blower gear ?? I understand this is a fairly simple repair - Jim barnes has been trying to help this poor old guy - Jim is now back on the road delievering equipement - he can still help relay info. I was able to talk to Jim (on the road) today - suggested that the owner flip the switch up on the pushbutton V731 shifter and count the pulses - to see if the DDEC is responding at all and to get any fault codes - Told him to look at the RTS Bus Nut Site - files section --> service manuals for the DDEC codes Also mentioned that there should be a "Engine Stop Override switch" - he should hold that switch up and try to start the bus - it's my understanding that this will override the DDEC "stop engine" for a short time to allow the driver to move the bus out of "arms way" If anyone can help Jim's # is 323 385 4490 and email direct at jimmybarnes60@yahoo.com The Flex owners # is (435) 823-2744 Hope someone can help - This guys is in his 80's - a WW2 Vet - and his wifes not doing good Pete RTS/Daytona |

First guess....I would say it's the computer,... on a non computer bus...it will run if it has fuel... |

kinda hard to troubleshoot 1000 miles away, but here goes.... make sure the ecm (engine contol module) has power.... if something happened to the "generator", something may have happened to the ecm... without a "reader" its just a guess as to what is wrong....lots of times, it's just a bad ground wire that will cause huge problems.... |

OK, I have the DDEC troubleshooting manual here... First question: What happens to the "Check Engine" light when the master switch is first turned on (without attemtping to crank the engine)? Does it: 1. Never comes on at all. 2. Comes on, but goes out after 3-4 seconds. 3. Comes on, and stays on indefinitely. Let me know, and we can take it from there. Also, for the next step, he will need to know where his DDEC diagnostic connector is. If this is DDEC-II (which is what I suspect) it should be a 12-position rectangular connector, probably under the dash someplace. -Sean |

Please have him check his fluid levels first - might be as simple as a low surge tank - but you didn't say if it a)won't turn over - probable electrical prob - b) cranks but won't start - ddec, fuel, etc. prob - Niles |

As I understand the story the problem happened when he installed a 12v alternator. I would look at the wiring for the alternator and around the wiring harness to see if something was installed incorrectly or caused a short in the system. I don't think it is fuel or the blower drive, it must be electrical. --Geoff '82 RTS CA |

Sean, I'm curious, do all DDEC I & II versions use a 12 position rectungular connector (sounds similar to an OBD II connector)? Was it proprietary to DD? As you know, DDEC III & IV use the industry standard round 6 pin connector, and the latest versions use a round 9 pin connector. Thanks, Chuck Newman Oroville, CA |

Chuck, I'm not sure what the DDEC-I took. That system is incompatible with the others and is no longer supported (if it breaks, you're looking at upgrading to a different system). All -II's have the rectangular, unless some enterprising mechanic has changed it to the round one for his own convenience. Remember, DDEC pre-dates the industry standard by several years. When the rest of the industry caught up to Detroit, the design of later generations of DDEC was influenced by the emerging standards. -Sean |

Sean, Thanks for the information. Mundane to most but I always find electronic product development and evolution very interesting. Chuck Newman Oroville, CA |

Boy, I'm glad my old DD is um... analog. Kudos to anyone that can get the 'ol Vet on the road again. This is a great Board! BB |

Pete -- Any update? Brian -- no way would I trade my DDEC for a mechanical. When the engine has any sort of problem at all, I just look at a display and it tells me what's wrong. Plus, I know I can never have a "runaway"... -Sean |

Sean: If it is impossible to have a runaway with DDEC then the computer must not run on Windows. |
