Folks,
I'm putting my waste valve on the curb side of the bus with room along the side of the waste tank to hold my sewer hose that then exits on the street side. Because I'm too lazy to walk around the bus to open the valve when dumping I'm planning to use an electonic 3" sewer valve.

Have any of you had experience with electonic valves that could steer me to a problem free unit?

Thanks,
Randy

Try "Drainmaster" valves. The older ones had some problems but I hear that the newer ones are ok.

Just make sure you don't get a short while parked on a bridge over the Chicago river!!!

Randy,

You planning on using a Phase 4 Industries Sewer Master? I bought one. Maybe we should just twin our H3's.

Also buying the Garnet Industries Model 720 level display and control. It is designed for the Sewer Master and will automatically dump black then gray then rinse.

might be wrong..seems like it was against the law to have it on right side ..due to people pulling up to a ditch & dump along the road..reguardless..all r.v. parks are set-up for the dump on the drivers side...

I gotta ask...why would the switch for the dump valve be located in the cockpit? You go hook up yer hose and then walk back in the coach to flip a switch...seems like a pain if that is the case...unless of course you're sitting on a bridge.

I've seen posts about dumping accidently while under way and all I can think is the next stop would be the quarter wash. ICK! Nuthin like duals running through raw sewage.

I believe that the RV codes don't permit a electric dump valve to be operated from inside the coach either, - for obvious reasons.

Back to the chicago River incident, it would seem to me that "the law" would have the crosshairs right on the driver's forehead if the dump switch was inside the coach. If its not, then a malfunction is a possibility.

A system like that really needs some kind of interlock.

Oh fir cryin' out loud...

I'm at a campground and all hooked up... Sewer hose is
connected and secure to the waste receptacle as required....
It's rainin' like all hell and the tank's full... so instead of going
out in the pouring rain to yank that damned waste valve, I hit
the very convenient switch to operate the electric valve and
empty the tank... All while inside my nice, dry RV. That's
the purpose of an extra switch inside the unit.

Jeeeeziz.. you guys and: "THE LAW" - "THE CODE"..

John,
No No NO...my original post was regarding the fact that I couldn't see a good reason to have a switch close to the driver...in fact it would kinda be a pain since most of the time you would be outside the coach.

Yes, you gave a valid reason to have an inside switch and no reason you couldn't install a switch in both locations.

In my 2nd post, when I mentioned "the law", I was refering the the cops that busted the driver. I don't have a problem with you having a switch located anywhere you want, but Officer Friendly might not see it like I do, especially after a mishap.

Anyone who dumps a black tank illegally should be prosecuted to the fullest extent...Blah blah blah.

Carry on smartly,

TD: There's good reasons to not leave the black tank valve open in CGs. Solids getting stuck (yuck) and all that.

JTNG: I think the elec. switch is fine, I'd just rather it not be up by the driver's seat. Avoids the appearance of impropriety and all. Maybe somewhere near your tank monitors...

Billybonz: the interlock is a great idea... won't dump unless a hose is attached. Fine by me.

Vin-

HAR! Sorry, I wasn't trying to single you out, man... I wuz kinda'
thinking out loud.. I keep reading all these posts regarding
"codes" and "the law" and it always gets my feathers up...

I don't know too many people that don't have good common sense,
and I sure haven't found any on this BBS. Everyone here seems
to have a sense of pride in what they have, and they try to do
the best they can with what they have available... cash or jive..
(and that means -me included-)

If I want to put a switch on my dashboard to dump the toilet,
there isn't a law in the land that would stop me. If I dump that
toilet in a storm drain... well...I guess I'll pay for the damage..
I'm tired of people thinking they have to pay a fine before they
do a crime... (gotta' be the libertarian in me)

With the electric dump valve, you can have as many switches
you desire. I'd much prefer to have it on my driver's panel, along
with any other switches that should be checked before departure.
I'd hate running all around making sure the "hidden switches" are
all turned off. And on the dash, it's secure from an accidental
hit by someone else in the vehicle (small kid?)

As far as the "appearance of impropriety " as someone mentioned?
Man.... I -do not- worry about what some idiot that knows nothing
about me, thinks of me. If I converted my horn button to operate
the electric dump... that's my business. If and when I dump the tank
on your lawn, that's your business. Do the crime; pay the fine, not
the other way around...

Just my opinion, of cuz.. I've been a lil' outspoken lately... oh well, eh?

Cheers man!

Two Dogs-

It's pretty widely accepted practice to leave that black tank valve
closed until there's sufficient liquid in it to push the semi-solid waste
out. Leaving it open prevents that necessary liquid from building.

If you haven't had a problem, consider yourself very fortunate.

You're just one lucky shi.....ahh, you already know that.

I believe if someone is dumb enough to wait until his black tank is full to overflowing and it is then pouring the rain down, then he needs to get wet! Who in the world waits until it is an emergency before they empty their black tank.

BTW, I recall reading somewhere that it is illegal to have a switch for an electric dump valve in the coach.

Um fellows... even if the switch is in the cab, you still gotta go outside and hook up the hose, no?
So why not just stick the silly switch outside near the hose fitting.

So then, back to KISS.... why even bother with a motorized doodah that costs a lot of bucks and will break someday? Slide valves are pretty cheap, pretty easy to locate SMARTLY and pretty reliable...
So back to post #1, randy, just put a stupid slide valve on the street side right behind the hose fitting and be done with it.... don't make things complicated.
Just think how you'll feel with a full tank o'poo when the electronic valve fails and either opens when you don't want it to, or doesn't open when you need it to.
Microprocessorized blenders and toasters are silly, and about the limit for me. Some things should remain mechanical...

Gary,

I'm not an advocate of remote dump valves, but I know there are a few that can be manually opened in the event of failure. Seems like a waste (pun not intended) to me but then I have a Fishbowl and plenty would say that is a waste.

Bottom line is, do what you can with what ya got. So, how bout a gas powered blender?

Oh my Lord!!

I guess I should be on death row in Huntsville by now.

Back to the original issue... now that I've read all these great ideas I think I'll put mine on a remote. That way, inside, outside, or on the Loo I'm ready to dump at any time! Especially, if I see 2Dogs following close by. :-)

I think I'll just by DrainMaster for the curbside and a simple mechanical for the street side and not try to explain how this will work (David - yep, just like a really cheap Phase 4).

Thanks all... geez.

TD: now don't get yer pannies all in a wad. All the RV'n books I've read recommend leaving them there valves closed. That way the plop plops don't just hit the bottom of the tank and sit there, like them kids that won't ever leave the house... they actually head out of yer tank downstream where they belong, once them valves are opened every now and then.

Now, I ain't a man that takes sides. If you likes your plop plops in yer bus instead a in the hose, then more power to ya. There's room enough in this here world for the plop plop keepers and plop plop sweepers... so I'm cool if yer cool.

Peace out,

(" There's room enough in this here world for the plop plop keepers and plop plop sweepers... ")

OH MY GOSH!
....................

Just need to make a system that is fully automatic, it is just like a GPS, it senses that you are in Chicago, and it senses metal, so it knows you are on a bridge. So that you don't polute the river, it senses a scuttle barge, convincingly disguised as a "Tour Boat", so when you dump, you dump into the Tour boat.

Technology is so great.....

I understand there are people trying to come back with the old crap burner that was popular in the early 70's. Some folks still have the parts.

This unit used to sense the engine at full temp, the tachometer at cruising speed and the level of the black tank. It had to be above 1/2 (I think) and it would pump black water into the exhaust system. The pump was a tube in a roller device, like the blood pumpers for liver patients. It would only drip or send a spray and the heat of the system would burn it up.

See, no more need for the City bridge dump routine, and having to wait for the scuttle to position itself under the bridge so you can eliminate the waste product that your body makes.

I wonder, if they truely do come back with the poop burner, if it can be installed on a diesel?

I guess if you camped in a CG all the time, it would not be useful but on the road, you would be fertilizing all of greater America....

Brings on some scary thoughts, doesn't it?

"pontificate on the reason for not dumping a shit tank in the dirt"

Technically, we do dump in the dirt...it just gets a bit of processing before it's dumped, either in a septic tank or a processing plant.

"it soaks in and you have instant fertilizer"

Well most of it soaks in, the bigger non-liquid parts tend to lay around awhile. One cure is everyone eat White Castles and Taco Bell and drink Budweiser...no more solids to deal with.

I think Jomama is offering to let everyone use his place as a dumping station.

In most States the Waste pipe needs to be CAPPED while underway ,
so a "legal" coach wold not BE able to dump on bridges or passing Skoolyards.

The Dupree is the best built of all the dump valves , and can be powered.

Personally I dont mind pulling a handle to dump , but on a RV I had to replace the dump valve , and that was ,

"Much Ungood" (as George Orwell would say).

I was thinking that an manual valve could be fitted with an air cylinder. Could still be operated manually.

How much force does it take to move the valve?

Hey Vin, those Gas Powered Blenders ROCK !!

I was at my favorite desert gathering last year (Burning Man), hot as hell in 110 degree shade, and there was this guy out in nowhere with no AC power avaliable, making marguritas for anyone caring to stop, with one of those gas powered blenders!

What a GREAT idea for places like that! Saved MY life... :-) I'd sure rather have a gas powered blender along than a electronic poop dumping valve, especially in that heat!!

Just after that I came across a guy making instant chocolate ice cream by dumping liquid nitrogen into a vat of chocolate ice cream mix. Now THAT was a sight to see.... and eat.... weird the stuff that goes on there but fun to see!!
Hee hee
