I have a sheard stud on my rear passenger side rear wheel ( the tyre guy over touqed it and it sheard) I know to replace the a front stud, it can be done without pulling the hub. Can you do this on the rear without pulling the hub?? I know the wheels must come off first. But I hate to have to pull the hub. Thanks John |

pull the hub....place on sidewalk, get big punch, big hammer, knock it out...draw new one in place with the lugnut...at least that's the way I've done it,not well versed with 4104 |

i looked at the 4104 servivce manual i bought from luke... the rear studs have a nut on the back side... they are not the "drive in" type... they are probably a tight fit... and will need to be "punched" out... if you can get the broken stud in line with the gap in in brake shoes, it may be enough clearance to remove/re-install... and i disagree with 2d... the "pull-in with a nut method" will overstress a new stud... better to drive or press that style in.... i know...i know... we've all done it... but ive pulled new studs apart.. and stripped threads doing it.... |

to add...... the rear drums are "outboard" style.... meaning that you don't have to disturb the wheel seals to replace brake shoes... the drums are held on with small tapered allen-headed bolts or flat screwdriver slotted bolts... pull the wheels off..remove the brake drum retaining screws... and you'll see the nut on the back of the stud... the stud goes in from the front.. and the nut is on the back side....... |

try taking the wheel and brake drum off, you may have to remove the brake shoes or at least take off the springs that hold the shoes together. then remove the nut off the stud at the inside of the hub now you may have enough thread put a nut on , if so place a large washer over the stud and run the nut on and it should draw the stud out and as it does just keep adding more washers as needed. |

Hello John If the tire guy broke off one, what condition might the rest be in? If you are going to go to all that work to replace one, good preventive maintenance and peace of mind to just do them all? And then stand over the SOB's and NEVER let them put fasteners on with a gun again. Torque wrench or go home for your new studs. happy coaching! buswarrior |

"If the tire guy broke off one, what condition might the rest be in?" Probably OK, Most tyre guys have never seen coaches with studs that are L on one side and R on the other. My guess is he broke it by ignorantly tightning with an oversized "I'm in a hurry air gun." These gents need to be warned in advance and a chalk instruction on the tire helps them remember! DISCLAIMER:::the tire people will probably not use a torque wrench to tighten your lug nuts... the lug nuts on your 40 yr old bus have been fatigued by countless tire mountings...so if you expect them to torque your wheels, furnish them the torque wrench....or do it yourself.... industry standard is using an air impact...... either do it yourself or get used to the system!!!... i admit it's frustrating to hear a lugbolts been broken off... but IT HAPPENS.... carry some spares!!!!..... |

the bus companys in this area get checked to see what shape the studs and nuts are in and if not good the bus is parked and repaired which means the inspector makes them change all on that wheel. the transit co. just spent $17,000 for a hyd, driven wrench that will put them on to within +or-1 pound. they purchased it due to a wheel coming off. again it went back to a laze tire spop guy that no longer works there, even their union did not speed much time fighting for him when they were showen how he had left bus and wrote it up as work done. when the tire came off it killed a man on the side walk. |
