Anyone have any expereince mounting a motorcycle lift such as the http://www.cruiserlift.com/
or the http://www.rvlifts.com/Index.html
on the rear of an Eagle? Will the bus structure handle it, etc.? IÕm thinking it might be the way for me to take the Harley along on our 1984.
Any comments or advice will be greatly appreciated.

"IF" you don't plan on a tow car....#2 would be best...tounge weight is critical on the hitch that you have...no 'real' structure to fasten it to...I am designing a motorcycle hauler for the front(of bus),...which will allow access to bus engine compartment..

I would still be towing our Ford Ranger (all 4 down). Not much tongue weight. Electra Glide maybe a little big for the front of Eagle? I'm asking - don't know - haven't thought about front mount.

Why not just haul the Harley in the back of the Ranger???

KISS Principle :-)

Harley too heavy for the little Trucklet without beefing up the suspension! Would like to replace Ranger with SUV or car.

Hey Dell,

One of the prettiest polished Eagles I've seen....Wish I had more information, But call some of the converters that I deal with every day. They may be able to lift that weight off your shoulders. If my memory serves me correct, your in Beautiful North Dakota. Call Ron Wilhelm at Montana Coach (406)892-8910 / Bob or Jim Lewis at Infinity Coach, WA (253)891-0879 / Dave at Rogue Coach, OR (541)-779-2864 / Burt Edmonds at ABC Bus, MN (507)334-1871 Let me know if you need more.

Thanks

Rich

Ya, TWODOGS, you are probably right. After looking things over under the Eagle, best not to be trying to hang that much on there. "HARLEY TOO HEAVY" Guess I better go for a bigger pickup. Thanks

I've been struggling with a similar issue except that I want my attached bike hauler to be *enclosed*.

Best solution I can come up with is to start with a Bluebird front-engine and build a rear platform off of the frame - which in the Bluebird is strong as hell and goes all the way to the back bumper, UNlike the Gillig and Crown mid-engines which would otherwise work the same way.

People have been building plaforms off the rears of the "All American" Bluebirds and Wanderlodges for ages, see also:

http://www.geocities.com/bluebirdwanderlodge/

It may look simple, but that extension can hold about 2000lb going down the road - it's really an extension of the frame which is "Peterbuilt grade" on these things. Such a platform is basically impossible on almost any other bus design.

It will cost me about $6k to do a similar platform adding 3.5ft to the length of another Bluebird and enclosed with a round steel tube frame and aluminum skin with an entry door at one end. But it will be THE most secure option for a bike and in my mind necessary for the sort of urban boondocking I'll need to do as a political activist.

--------

On an Eagle, GMC or whatever, doing one of the lifts at http://www.rvlifts.com actually makes some sense, except you've got to re-mount the headlights on a special mount ahead of the bike on the lift, or at least add secondary lights to the front as a full-length Harley will block the original light locations. And a cloth cover over the bike will be crucial, and it'll look funny...but it'll work.

Me, I'd rather have a full-on "hanger bay" than just a rail. With the bike out, this "mini garage" can have a fold-down workbench used for small crafts, a reloading station or the like.

I've seen plenty of compact trucks hauling big bikes...does the Harley have saddlebags full of lead ingots?

776 pounds "Dry Weight". http://www.harley-davidson.com/PR/MOT/2005/05_template.asp?bmLocale=en_US&market=US&family =Touring&model=FLHTC&modelSection=specs
Over 800 pounds with accessories and wet. Small pickups can handle it with modifications to rear suspension. Plus the lift carriers weigh 250-450 pounds depending on which brand.

there is nothing realy to attach to on an Eagle that would permit more than 500 pounds tounge weight...must also take into consideration that when you hit a dip or a bump...the Harley weighs 5000 pounds

Yes TWODOGS, I'll repeat my post of the 15th ---

Thanks again for all the opinions,

I just realized I left out a word: FRONT.

In other works, carry the sucker on the front end of an Eagle or whatever instead of the back :-).

Like I say, you'd have to mess with headlight mountings...and it'd look semi-bizarre...
