A friend has what he believes to be a 3 speed brownie. It fits behind the transmission. He says it will give me hiway gears and I need it for my bus, '75 Crown. I'm wondering if anyone knows where I could find out what these numbers mean. It's made by Dana/Spicer. Model# 7231-B Serial# 792705 B/M# 300142-35 |

Jerry - Can't help you with the numbers, but just a word of caution: How long is the unit? Installing it might make the driveshaft too short for any U-joint longevity. That driveshaft's already pretty short in a mid-ship Crown. . . FWIW, RJ PD4106-2784 Fresno CA |

Thanks RJ, I think you are right. This thing is almost as big as the transmission. There would not be much drive line left. Thanks Jerry |

Yeah, the drive shaft on any Crown is just too short to allow the installation of an auxlauary (sp) tranny or 'brownie'. Sorry. However...and I love a good plan, the famous, (infamous?) RTO 910 close ratio 10-speed overdrive Roadranger tranny may fit just fine. Figure on a 22% overdrive 10th gear. Sossss, if you are speed limited, add 22% to what you have now. If you have a Fuller 5 speed right now, even the single shift rod will work for you. Will have to run an air line for the range shift tho. I have the RTO-910 in my '74 Crown 10-wheeler. Maximum coool. A gear for every occasion, plus some you will not need. 85 mph!!! Another plan would be to change out the case in the rear end. A whole lot less work and you can gear your Crown to what top speed you want. CROWNS FOREVER!!! |

Hi Henry, Long time no type. We went thru this on one of the Crown boards last year, I do want no neeeed an RTO-910. Perhaps one will appear. In the mean time this 3 speed brownie showed up for free so I thought I'd check it out. I can't swap the rear end because I have to have my low gear. Since we typed last in November I have put 5750 miles on my Crown. Only about 1000 miles on freeways the rest in Mexico and on the back roads of the southwest. With the suspension being so hard on this bus, most of the time if you drove over 60 you would just bounce off the road. Only on the freeways would I like to cruise at 70. I made it over lots of hills in 5th gear so I have the power for an overdrive but I've got to have 1st gear for crossing rivers and crawling thru the jungle. I need that Roadranger. In Case you haven't seen them elsewhere, here's a few pictures from down south http://www.peak.org/~jerryc/downsouth.htm Thanks Jerry |

Huh. I wonder if that "brownie" would work in a Bluebird front-engine? It should. Man, would THAT be funky - the rig I'm going the get the instant my cash shows up (literally any day now!) already has a 2sp Eaton rear axle and a Spicer 5sp manual. Put a 3sp in the middle and you've got...ye gods, how many gears IS that? 30!? :D |

Jerry....way cool pictures. I am very jealous. Do wish it was me in my Crown on that beach down in Mexico somewheres. You are living my dream! Where are all the women??? You are much more brave than me. One of the things that Crown Super Coaches do NOT have is a lot of underneath chassis clearance. How did the old girl (The Crown!) handle all of those off road situations and wild river crossings? The stories you could tell for sure. Yeah, the RTO-910 Roadranger would work out fine for you, but I am now wondering if that tranny would have enough of a low hole starting gear... ...to really let you crawl thru the rivers and jungle. You seesss, the RTO-910 was only kinda successful in heavy trucks 30 to 40 years ago... ...because the starting gear (first) was just not low enough to work well at maximum weight at 10000 feet at 100 degrees F. A 6.17 1st gear. In my Crown 10-... ..wheeler, I never use 1st (I start in 2nd) but then my Crown never sees the dirt. Another Crown Coach owner swapped out his 5 speed for... ...a RTX-13509 9-speed Roadranger. This box is a fairly wide ratio overdrive 8 speed with a granny low and reverse. He did it to... ...greatly increase the road speed. With the deep reductionn granny gear (like about 12.00 to one!) he can climb walls at idle speed, plus... ...still do an easy 75 mph. But....he has a pumped up 743 Cummins turbo mill. And..the tranny swap was very difficult as EVERYTHING... ....had to be changed out or modified. But...since he is a rocket scientist kind of guy, he just did it anyway. I am wondering if we could not find an older Fuller overdrive 6 speed (TO906) that would work for you. Figure on the same about low gear,... ...but with a 32% overdrive or sooss. But, then again we do not know how much of a job it would be to change out your tranny. Let me ask a few people and make a few calls. Anything is possible, we just want to keep your low gears, while giving you some more reasonable... ...road speed or soosss. You 671N Detroit will only pull so much gearing. We do not want to overgear you Crown. Later... |

Thanks Henry, A 6 speed would be good. About the women, I learned a long time ago while hitchhiking around Alaska that if you don't take it with you probably won't find it. That includes good coffee, girls, a good chair to sit in, and so on. Thats why I need a bus. I am way too spoiled. The clearance under the bus did not present a problem. The low spot is the pan and thats on the right so not too bad to maneuver around. All in all this bus was exactly what I hoped it would be. See Ya Jerry |

RTO9509 is same size as 910 but has slightly more of overdrive, lower first gear and a little wider spread between the gears. Can provide ratio's if wanted |

John has it right. Seems the older overdrive 9-speeds are very inexpensive also. The problem is, like John is willing to share, is that 8th gear in the 9-speed OD is a whopping 37% overdrive. The question is could your 671N pull that tall high overdrive gear. You said already Jerry that you can go 60 in direct. Could your Detroit pull an 80+ mph road speed? Anyway, that is the question. Also the Fullers tend to be a very wide, flat trannys since the twin countershafts are lateral and not below the mainshaft, thus increasing/maintaining ground clearance. Jerry, what kind of 5-speed do you have right now? Crown used a Spicer 6600 series in a lot of coaches your age. But...you could have something else too like a T-905 Fuller. Look under and see. CROWNS FOREVER!!! |
