Any suggestion on the best satellite dish that can handle in motion reception? What service is recommended? Thanks in advance! |

Camping world has one on sale for what looks like a good price: $1,599 http://www.campingworld.com/browse/skus/index.cfm?skunum=24398 I am not recommending this unit, just pointing it out. I've been thinking of replaceing the stationary dish that came with my bus with this KVH. Does anyone have experience with it? I sure hate to spend $1,600 just to watch TV, but my older Motosat quit working and I cannot find anyone to service it. BTW, in my experience Motosat tech support and service is poor and I wonder whether the company will be around for long. Of the dozen or so dealers in So. Cal. listed on Motosat website, all deny selling the brand, and some say they never did. |

Well so far the Motosat is the only way to have a mobile DirecWAY (Hughes) Internet setup and still abide by the Hughes terms of service. DirecWAY was never meant to be mobile, and Motosat is the first to have accomplished what Hughes assumed was impossible (an autoseeking sat finder that does proper dish alignment). I'd be willing to bet that the moment a second system is authorized by Hughes, Motosat is going to be in trouble. Meanwhile people are buying kits that allow manual user setup and re-aim of what are supposed to be stationary DirecWAY dish setups. Hughes has expressed disapproval of this and has threatened a crackdown, but no *systematic* disconnects have cropped up yet. Individual, yeah, when people screw up the aim. You can save at least $2000 on the upfront costs versus Motosat with such "tripod and manual aim" critters and $40 a month...but if you're bouncing around a lot, setup time is far longer. Most of what you're paying Motosat for isn't just the auto-popup dish mount, it's also the autoseeking controller...over $3k worth. I'm going to watch over the next month, month and a half, see if the major competitor to Motosat gets Hughes official approval. Otherwise I'll probably just go Motosat. |

I am an avid camper but still a bus wannabe. My wife likes the camp parks and the room that the four slides on our 5th wheel offers. So far I haven't been able to convince her that storage room is more important than living room, but thats my problem. As to the dish; I have never owned an in motion dish but I have a roof mount auto positioning one. Most of the parks we stay in in ga and fla are wooded and it is seldom that I don't have a tree or something in the way. I carry 300 ft of coax and a portable dish so that I have the option of moving it to a spot that has a window to the sats. We just left Hanna park in jacksonville fla. Various spots in the park looked like dish orchards. The auto stuff is nice but don't throw the dish and tripod away. |

I had wired my Terry Expo 23LV for Dish TV. Had a connection under the camper. Had fifty feet of R-6 coax for the dish. I dialed the zip code in the receiver. That gave me the direction of the spinning ball in the sky. I used an antenna signal finder and a compass. Was able to get it tuned in less than five minutes. Had to sell the camper because there was no room for both in the driveway. On my bus, I installed a roof top in motion antenna. Wife can watch TV on the couch with the wiener dogs and let me drive. I too have camped where trees were everywhere. That is why I also installed coax for a remote antenna outside the bus. Jeff: How did u come by an '88 6v92 w/ DDEC IV? Did u change to it with the additional sensors? Everything I've read indicates a change from I to II in '88, w/ IV not coming out until '97-'98, by which time the V92 engines were not available for highway use in most states. I understood that the IV was strictly a 4 cycle application ECM w/ added control for both intake and exhaust strokes. Educate me here, will u? |

I can't say which is the best, but the KVH on our Prevost works very well, either stationary or in motion. When in motion you get a picture just as good as when parked, except occasionally a severe dip in the road or a bridge or a tunnel will temporarily mess up the signal. Almost all of the time however it works perfect. We use Direct TV programming and I never thought I would find in motion TV to be important, but the ability to monitor the weather channel is worth the price of admission. |

I have a California bus. Santa Clara had updated about 15 RTS buses. Rebuilt 731v & 6v92TA with the newest smog guidelines. That is why it is a DDEC IV. My bus was refitted in August 2000. Soon after, the Federal Government told VTA to downsize their fleet and gave them a grant for new buses. They were all auctioned in Geoff's town. Geoff met me at the airport in Oakland. I got a quickie driving lesson. Then was pointed east on the on ramp to I 80 when I said good bye to Geoff & Sherry (Great People!) Another RTS Bus Nuts member has a sister bus to mine. Also a DDEC IV. & that is the Gospel Truth! |

I have always had, and enjoy Direct TV. Now, there is a motion sat disk that is flat and mounts on the rv roof. It is a lot of bucks but is supposed to be quite the antenna. Cost is coming down but I don't think its there yet. I don't have the link for the page but I think I can get it if needed. It was on a discussion sometime back on the GMC Motorhome board. The other moving dishes, seem to me, to be too big and bulky. In camp, since I don't have this flat dish, I use a standard DSS dish on a motorized stand. Works great. Set it and forget it. Hope this was at least marginally helpful. cd |
