Two Dogs just called on his way home, his tow dolly carrying his 280Z came loose from the bus, continued down the road until it hit a street sweeper in the construction zone. Shortened the Z car a couple feet from the rear, tow dolly may not be useable either. He hated the damn tow dolly anyway.

I had no idea that Two Dogs went for those fancy foreign sports jobs. Was the tow dolly from Japan too?

I got ahold of Jim and my daughter in Victoria (Jimcat), he is on the way out to find him and get the mess off the road for him. Jim has a trailer and lots of room to park wrecks. Two Dogs is shook up, takes a lot to shake him up.

No Greg, it was from Belgium, no wait a minute, that was the Eagle, no the Eagle was a Brownsville Eagle, sure can get confused these days. Tow dolly was homemade I think.

2dogs, hope you and your family is ok.
Sorry to hear this kind of news...

But for reference, is there any information as to what caused the failure?

If the Ball come loose, broken shaft on ball, hitch device failure????? Why did the chain not hold?

Or vice versa???

I use a tow dolly so I am very interested in the specifics if we can get 2Dogs to talk about it.

I am also putting in one of those self contained breaking systems which, in theory, will lessen the ability to cause widespread damage. (BreakAway interlock). I chose self contained because I tow behind a couple of different vehicles and an air assisted braking system was not an option.

Sorry to hear of such a calamity when someone is on the road. We all like to keep things smoothy!

The way he explained it to me, seems the flipper lever on the hitch lost its security bolt, and it came loose from the ball, not sure if he had a safety chain or not (Bet the cop raised hell if he didn't). Last I heard he was going to sleep on my daughters couch for the night, right beside the computer, so would expect him to fill you in shortly (if he is not too embarassed).

I pull a trailer quite often when going racing and have heard stories of this same exact thing happening from fellow racers. That's why I always use a tonque lock and 2 safety chains! A GOOD lock TOO!!

Sorry for your mis-fortune 2Dogs!

As of now he has a bus in a Wal Mart lot, wrecked car in my daughters drive, and he is about to crash for the night there I guess. Think Jim took the dolly home with him. All settled down for the night!

OH MAN! I knew he was going to be heading out of there any day now and guessed he was on the road because of no recent posts.

Two Dogs, you didn't need that kind of grief. I'm glad it didn't hit a passenger vehicle.

Just keep telling yourself, "That which does not kill us makes us stronger."

If you need anything when you get closer north, let me know. You got my number.

>>the hitch came loose<<

Yeah, I can see that happening.

I've been concerned about the hitch situations on all these rear-engine buses. Some people have done them up right with a cradle going all the way under the motor and back to the rear suspension points which are dead solid. Still gives you problems in terms of vertical loads at the ball but flat-towing, something like this is borderline impossible.

The Bluebirds/Wanderlodges (front engines) seem to have THE best hitch possibilities, period, end of discussion with heavy unbroken frame rails going right to the back bumper.

The word "girlfriend" sounds like we are talking about an 18 year old. I suppose we can stretch the term up to 30 or so, but above that we need to look for another word. When we are talking about a 50 or 60 year old, you might start using the term "female companion." I think that is covered in laws that deal with truth in fantasy.

kinda exciting night..... had 2 messages on my cell....didn't recognize the numbers... so i listened to the messages... 2dogs calling to tell me he had a wreck, then jennie's husband (don ks/tx's son-in-law) calling me to tell me 2dogs was had problems and was looking for me...i returned 2dogs' call.. and started looking... he didn't really know where he was....and as victoria has road construction and new road signs, i took off... wrong direction, of course....after about 40 miles of driving, i called 911....city cops hadn't any info so they switched me to the tx dps... they knew!!!!... i was about 8 miles away at this point... finally found him.... the coupler had come unlatched, safety chains had ripped off and the 280zx and tow tolly were sitting in a constuction zone median.... i called a wrecker, we jerked the dolly from under the mangled z-car, loaded the car on the wrecker..its after dark now..... some lady pulls up and parks, blocking trafiic (maybe 2dogs future new girlfriend maybe)..and want to know if we needed the cops....told her no, but she called them anyway.. so here comes victoria's finest.... we're out of the city limits, but whattheheck, its a slow night....i guess our mangled-looking little group wasn't convincing....(me, 2dogs, and 2 bikers, and the wrecker driver) finally left the crime scene.. .lol....i towed the car dolly. had 2dogs follow me to wal-mart, where we left the eagle... and went to jennie's house to pay the wrecker driver and let 2dogs use the computer so all you guys could contribute to this madness!!!!... we took pics, visited and i took 2dogs back to his eagle.... got home about midnite..... lotsa fun.... moral??? not any....info??? buy a gps so you can tell searchers where you are!!!!

Twodogs,
Thats bad news sorry to hear that. Im just glad no one was hurt.
I hope when you have time to get over this you can post some pic's of what the chains bust off so others here can learn form this . Maybe your bad may help someone form having the same thing happen.
I going to relook over my safety chain set up and buy a lock for the hitch latch.
I have heard about kids lifting the uncoupler lever just for kicks or if you have bikes or motor cycles on the back undoing the tie downs when your parked .

Hey 2dogs -sorry about the Z! Glad you are OK, and that the bus is too!

Towing is no fun. Our sailboat tried to pass us on I-90 in WA. the only thing that stopped it was the safety chain, then the tongue jammed into our fiberglass truck fender and lodged onto our tire. Sorry we didn't take pictures!

If it weren't for bad luck, Two Dogs wouldn't have any luck at all. Last report, second hand information is that when he decided to ditch the pieces of car and dolly and head North, when he started the bus a dead o'possom dropped out of the engine compartment! Problem was however, the critter decided to commit suicide by running himself between the fan belts and pulley, derailing the belts! Two Dogs was absent from his parking spot this evening however, so must have gotten them back in the grooves.

Two Dogs himself refered to his name as coming from an old joke, I think it was the one concerning two "interconnected" dogs and what the Indian chief named one of his sons...

AND I believe TwoD said it was his father's nickname for him.

But after seeing what he did to that nice old Z-car YIKES,
my honey and I vote for a new name
