Hi, My neighbors spend 5 or 6 weeks at Quartzsite every year and they use our local phone company, which is Citizens Communications, the cellular division is known as Mohave Wireless. They are also using the old analog system with a bag phone (3 watts) which is far superior than the digital in these out lying areas. When I asked her how others got on, she said that there was always someone with a digital phone wandering out in the desert trying to get a good signal!!! Sprint has been erecting towers around the Kingman area, but I don't know if they have been improving reception around Quartzsite. BTW, I have a 3 watt Motorola bag phone for sale if anyone is interested, real nice condition, email me off BB, (I went to the V3620 analog Vadar phone with a 3 watt booster car unit). Peter. |

We have spent the last 5 winters in Quartzsite and have no trouble with our Startac phone. We get good signal in the camping areas and town. Our service is with Verizon, no roaming fees on the one rate plan. 35.00 a month for 150 mintues. Dave |

Try Verizon 11 state no roaming and no long distance, 150 minutes weekday and 2000 weekend minutes for $30 a month. My parents put one on my plan since they do not have Verizon and spend the winter in Parker and Quartzsite. tony |

Look at the coverage of Sprint. Sprint uses PCS network, very poor coverage area. If it will work in Quarzsite and your normal travel area (Larger Cities) it is the best deal going. If you would like to make a call between cities, you're not! tony |

I work for a PCS company in the engineering area. Here is what I recommend for consideration: 1) All of the old cellular carriers have to maintain an analog portion of their system for use by old style analog phones. 2) PCS networks are still in the "growing" stage so you will probably be out of coverage when away from metropolitan areas or major interstates. 3) The old 3 watt bag phone or permanent installed cell phone with an external antenna will get you the best likelyhood of a signal in remote areas. The power and the height combined make this possible+ 4) Analog rates are frequently higher due to old technology that is not as spectrum effecient. What I recommend is using an AT&T dual mode phone with their nationwide rate plan (I don't work for AT&T - I work for someone else). This has automatic roaming on analog cellular IF you buy a dual mode phone. The Nationwide one-rate plan keeps the costs in check. If you look around, you may find a docking charger with external antenna that will keep you going in the boondocks. My two cents worth. |
