i cant get my transmission to shift out of third using the shift lever i have traced the problem to the 3-4 shifting rod somewhere above the rear end. forward of the rear end it come out of the bulkhead and has a fiber type cover over it. both the cover and the rod move back and forth when i operate the shift lever. behind the rear end the rod barely moves and the covering moves 2 inches in either direction when the shift lever goes from third to fourth and back. i can't see above the rear end itself i wonder if there is a coupling on the rod or is the rod broken?

Well we don't know what year the 04 is but I would say the rust and old age has taken it,s toll on the shift rods.Up over the differental area.Check there for the break.
While you are there check your fuel supply and return lines as they will corroded also.
This is a known problem area for us 4104 owners.
Note I said us I just bought a 2nd bus.It,s a 4104.Now I own 2 buses one is a P8M4905A and the other is the 4104.
Have I got a understanding wife!You bet.
