My shifter has a lot of play in it... and also been learning to shift without clutch, sometimes the linkage will slip on the rear hub at bulkhead and be stuck in third gear... I have to get out and mess with it by hand back there to get it back in working order so I can shift it. Is there an adjustment for this or is it just wore out?

Ron,

Mine was hanging up when I first picked her up.

I lubed all the grease points and it made a big difference.

There are at least four or five directly behind the engine where the linkage makes a 90' over to the transmission and several at the transmission.

Also one under the plate at the bottom of the shifter.

You may have already done this. If not give it a try.

If you ever get up near Wildwood let me know, I would like to see your coach.

Ron - I heard that it is not hair loss, but rather a solar panel for a love machine. :-)

Glad you told me, I can't shift a spicer without a clutch!!!! I have been shifting without a clutch for at least 30 years!!
I have replaced a couple of transmissions in that time though.
A tender touch, and a slow hand, you can do it.

Not sure why this is such an issue. . .

Granted, it is a lot easier/gentler on the powertrain if the Spicer crash gearboxes are double-clutched with each shift - I even point that out in the article I wrote that's posted elsewhere on this website.

But they can be shifted w/o using the clutch, once you learn the rhythm, feel, and quirks of the particular coach and it's powertrain.

Even single-clutching works, but again, only after you've learned that particular coach's characteristics.

Not everyone can do it, however, just like not everyone can sing like Sinatra, Streisand, Aiken or Clarkson. So the recommendation remains to double-clutch the Spicers for clutch and transmission longevity.

RoadRangers, however, are a whole different ballgame!

YEAH....but you START by double clutching...after a year or so...then you can get fancy...got to learn to walk before you learn to run..

Ron
While you are greasing as Cliff recommended. Check all of the clevis and clevis pins for wear and the 90 degree bell crank. A little wear at each point adds up to a lot over the entire system. I once drilled/ reamed some to one over size pins and installed new bushing on everything at the 3 bell cranks 2 shifters and 1 clutch. Just a thought besides shifting techique.

Ron, when they talk about shifting without using the clutch they are talking about trannysthat have the stick coming straight up out of the floor or on a bus that has a much better linkage than yours, on a bus that has loose linkage or stiff due to poor maintenance you will find that it is going to be very costly to learn. rember busses were designed not to do this with them that is why they have square cut tranny gears without syc.mesh. mel 4104

Mel, I'm curious about what you said about the square cut gears. I've never known any sliders, synchro or not that were anything but square.

If they weren't, you would have a battle getting them into and out of gear with no more than oil drag on them.

The ends of the non-synchro sliders are always rounded, as far as I know, so rolling the slider into the gear doesn't cause any strain on them. I think that I have seen some pretty sharp edged teeth on synchro sliders.

All the teeth are engaging at the same time, so there would not be much strain on any one tooth as you push it into gear, unless there is a heavy load applied while the slider is only half engaged.

I agree that shifting without the clutch makes it possible to overload the ends of the slider and gear teeth. That's when the lever pops back against your hand with a hard bang. 8(

If a person wants to shift without using the clutch, then a tach would make it a lot easier to get it right, especially when the engine is hard to hear or the throttle is sticky.

To each his own, I guess.
