My Dad and I both have 4104s. He just bought a V671 for his and we are going to put it in his and put his in mine. I can use any advise out there. Anything we need to do before we start. Michael |

Me, I'd rather have the straight-six block than the V, as it's easier to get to everything with the straight. Running the back rack could be a pain, unless you've got some sort of "under the back bed" access to the back half of the motor as is common on the 4106 (came factory with V engines). My concern is that since the 4104 didn't start out with a "V", no such provision was made. Also, the straight-block 671 with turbo was a fairly common setup, probably more common than turbo with the V version. A 671T in a 4104 would be a really sweet combination... |

Mike I would assume the reason for the v block is to install an automatic transmission. Is this correct? If so there are other concerns such as v drive angle. Tim |

Mike, Jim is right lots of change outs now are to the 671TA as they are much lighter, not as much wieght on the bulk head. Also you can go auto with them 300+hp. RDW has had one in his 04 for about 2 years now 50,000 miles, no problems. John You will need to up grade your cooling system rad etc. |

Mike is asking for advice, and mine is to forget the whole thing! Why put a 6V71 to replace a 6-71? You are not gaining any power for a lot of work. If I was motivated enough to repower a 4104 with a V-engine it would be a 350HP 6V92TA. But personally I think if you want more power and an automatic you should just buy a newer bus that has what you want to begin with. --Geoff '82 RTS CA |

Actually it's my Stepdad's project and he has already bought the V671, hoping for an increase in power and an automatic transmission. All I am supposed to do is help him switch engines. His is in better shape than mine, so we will then switch my 671 for his. So unless it is a really bad idea or not doable, I'm committed to the switch. I was an auto mechanic, back when I had a good back, but don't know much about diesels except for working with my 671. Advise on how to do it if possible whould be appreciated. Michael |

Hi Mike you really aren't going to gane any power over the in line 671. And for serviceabilty you can't beat the old in line. How ever I am aware of no V drive automatic transmission that can be used with the inline in a 4104. Still if you are going to all the work to change to a auto trans you really should consider a 6v92. Again be aware the the V angle of the rear axle is different and will need to be changed out to either a 96" rts or 4106 rear. If cost is a big issue I have a 6v92 and v731 auto that I would sell very reasonable. Another good option would be to install a series 50 4 cycle detroit and auto. I took a ride in Rdub's 3751 a few weeks ago he had install that combo in it and his bus really runs great! Best of luck with what ever you decide. Tim |

Mike, you can put a V730 auto tranny in a 4104 with a in line 6-71 without changing the rear end.a fellow 4104 owner in Victoria did the switch last year and then went on a trip of about 5,000 miles as a test run without any vibration or any trouble. the sad part of this story is that Murray passt away 2 weeks ago at the age of 84. as stted you will have to increase the rad size and redo the back bulk head and move the engine side ways, and of course there are other changes also. mel 4104 |

I'm Karl, Michael's dad and after looking at all the messages and talking with some of you, I'm abandoning my plan to repower my 4104. Anyone know of a good deisel mechanic in the Anacortes, Burlington WA area? Anyone want to buy a V671 that runs good? Thanks for all the info |
