No I haven't, but you might want to check if there is a maximum bulb wattage for back-up lights. I have seen back-up lamps on big rigs the size of 5" headlights anyway. Make sure they go off when not in reverse and have a warning lamp on the dash as well to make sure.
(If you install some hi-lo units, you switch them onto hi-beam when some idiot comes up behind with his brights on...... Jus' kiddin'...... )

I've used a headlight style bulb on the bumper of my RV. I had it connected to a switch only. Had to make sure not to hit the switch while going down the road. But it WAS great for backing into spots at night. Lit the whole place up like fort Knox. The thing is I wanted to have the option of it not coming on if I wanted too. If there was enough ambient light, no need to draw attention my slef backing in at night. On the other hand, I can see why it would be prudent to have it linked to reverse, so that it was not activated inadvertently. One could do both, have a switch and reverse activated light. On my bus, I'll probably mount two, way up high, on each corner and at angles.

In Michigan the Motor Vehicle Code says a white light to the rear must only be able to be energized when the vehicle is in reverse. A white light to the rear that is on while going down the road will probably get you a warning. A BRIGHT light on at night while going forward will probably get you written proof.

That being said, I am using a pair of "scene lights" as used on the back of many fire tricks and E units. I bought them from a fire truck supply. They really light up the area at night. I should put a pilot light on them so I don't have them on at the wrong time, I suppose.

Seems to me that it would not be a great idea to just tap into the existing reverse light to power much more current hogging lights. The light I had on my RV was powered from my house batteries. However, a relay could be used whereby the coil was energized by the existing reverse light. Then one could also have a big switch in the cockpit connected by heavier guage wire so that the light(s) came on only if both the relay was energized and the switch was thrown. As Jim says, pilot would be nice too. That way, one could have the choice of whether to use them or not and still be within code.

thanks for the input i never planned to waiver in my use of the backup headlights and i do plan to have a switch in parrellel to the reverse switch to give a friendly reminder to people behind that their high beams are on i did know that it was a writable offence to have them on while driving

Recently on the web I saw a set of back up lights mounted up high next to back up camera. Seemed to me like a good idea to check on tow & back up.
