I have a 1984 Eagle 10 that has a dead Neihoff alternator 350 amp on it. I am thinking about changing over to a Delco 150 or 160 amp. Will the Delco run the two big over the road heater motors with everything else or will I have to disconnect the motors with this setup? If you have done this, how does it work out? |

Dennis, if the alternator is not fried, they are often easy to repair. And oversized alternators do not waste much power if you are not using it all. Are you sure it's not worth repairing? On the other hand, if you start using near the limits of your alternator for any amount of time, it is going to spend most of it's time cooking hot. If anything should affect the cooling by very much, it's going to be too hot, and then it WILL be fried. Just idling for a little while can do that. For what it's worth. In doing some research once, I found the "rated output" of the small delcos to be worthy of some distrust. As I recall, it is something like yeah, that is the output, but ONLY if you are in the frozen Northlands, subzero weather, running your vehicle over 120 mph. Ever wonder why a big truck alternator with only a smidge over 100amp rating is as big as several of the small delcos? |
