Is it possible to change a DD 8v71 into a DD 8v92? I saw an 8v71 on e-bay that was claimed to have been changed to an 8v92. Just wondering how that could be done.

I was recently looking at an AM General on eBay that claimed they had a "Silver 8V92" but the picture of the engine looked like an 8V71 painted silver. But it is not unusual to find false claims on eBay, either from false advertising or just plain ignorance. And no, you cannot change an 8V71 into an 8V92. You have to swap the engines.

I saw that auction and sent a note off to the seller. The exchange went like this...

I wrote: That is not a series 92 engine. It's an 8V71 and the transmission looks like a VS2. That hideous silver paint on the engine is a good indicator that the engine was not rebuilt by Detroit Diesel, otherwise it would be green."

Response: There is no paint on the engine. It's called a Silver 92, It's not painted Silver. Yes the tranny is a VS2. And I can only tell you what I've been told by Diesel mechanics who have looked it over.

Now I don't know if they ever made any aluminum 8V71 engines, and cast iron left unpainted for 30 years usually turns reddish brown. This, of course, ignores the concerns as to whether you could actually mate a VS2 to an 8V92 or if a VS2 could handle the application with any reasonable longevity.

You see a lot of it on e-bay. Some of it is intentionally done as "sales hype". I think most of it is done out of sheer ignorance of what they have. They simply don't know and relied on advise from someone else who didn't really know. 6v71 for 6v92 is another one. 4 spd 730's is another common one just because they are feeling lockup or they really have a Voight. Another one is Cummins 5.9 for an 8.3. There is one on there now claiming an 8v92 for what I suspect is a 8v71 and in fact could be a 6v71, since it was common for the bus as stock. I walked when he replied that it was an 8v92, since I found it hard to believe. It's clearly a caveat emptor marketplace there and anyone would be well advised to be up on the product line they're shopping, like the "Like New" 4 yr. old Dina Viaggio I once looked into. Turned out it had been 'red tagged' of the road by the CHP for broken structural welds and cracked brake drums. I've bought 3 on there, but I've walked (run on some, like the Viaggio) on at least 30 that I looked into.

I didn't think that you could change the displacment of a DD engine, but I wasn't sure. I blew the 8v71 in my '77 AMG and am looking for another one. Thanks to everyone that posts to this BBS. It's been a life saver to help me answer questions that I have about our little hobby. I'm looking forward to having my bus back on the road soon. Take care.
