Hi all, intro first, We are a full time family of 6 in a month old 1980 MC9 homemade conversion. We bought the bus on the internet from a milwaukee charter co. I flew to WI and drove the bus home to arkansas, where we stripped it and put in most of the "upstairs". and electric. We then had a job start in minnesota and drove up here. I am still putting in the water system, but have most all of the "other" stuff in. Now for the problem. The other morning we moved the bus from one side of town to mthe other and the clutch started to slip pretty good mostly in second. the outside temp was 40 degrees and I let the bus warm for 30-45 min. before leaving. problem no. 2 possibly connected. the man i bought the bus from said" when you push her she'll blow a little oil from the front tranny seal". Well he was right, the rear of the bus was covered with what smells like 90 wt. oil by the time we reached minn.- with no change in the two dipstick levels. Question- what do i do now? please help Devin |

Pull the tranny, put in a new clutch plate, fix the tranny. You may be able to salvage the clutch disc, but probby not. Once they get saturated and glazed, they generally do not give good service, regardless of how good it may be otherwise. At any rate, you need a minimum of new seals in the tranny. What the man told u when u bought it is not "possibly" connected; it is. |

Devin, Sorry to hear about your problem. I grew up in Bemidji but left so long ago I know hardly anyone there anymore. My ex-brother in law may be of some help as far as finding a mechanic and/or shop for you. Call Russel Dickenson 218-759-1349. Russ lives just north of BJI on Irvine Ave. He drove a log truck for a while, so may know of someone that can help. Just tell him his ex bro in law, Rodger Manecke gave you his #. I doubt you'll need to pull the engine to drop the trans or get into the clutch. Just need to get it over a pit for access. |

Devin: No, you don't have to pull the engine. Once u pull the drive shaft you can bring the tranny fwd. However, as Rodger says, you will need a pit, or better yet, a means of elevating the bus (like hydraulic wheel lifts) because the tranny is going to have to come out under from the bus for the repairs to it. I suppose you could do a seal replacement while underneath, but you also need to check bearings and if u also have troubles there I would want it out and on a stand. |

You DO have some clutch pedal free play, right? If the clutch is far enough out of adjustment, so that there is no free play, it can slip, too. I'd check adjustment first though even if it's not worn out, you are going to have to fix the seal leak someday. But if it can be adjusted, you can schedule the work at YOUR convenience. Jim-Bob |
