Have a truck mechanic doing some work on my motor87/6/92.He mentioned that I should get rid of that big air breather and put in a smaller truck one and would give me more room in back bay.But Iam wondering why MCI uses them if you don't need them. Thanks for any help. Lbrown |

I'd ask to see his engineering degree and work experience before I consider his advice. |

DD 2-strokes need a LOT of air, Much higher continous flow than 4-stroke trucks. What kind of coach do you have that the air cleaner is in the back bay? Dave.... |

It is a 102a2 and not realy in bay, but the back compartments are bigger than mc9 and would leave a lot more room to work or put genset in if the breather wasn;t so big.He just mentioned that he works on trucks with this same motor an they have smaller breathers. But I want to check with other bus guys because it is not a truck and I think someone would have did it if possible. Thanks for any inputlbrown |

Quick ref chart: http://www.mcicoach.com/assets/quickref.pdf Actually, there's no reason a truck 6v92 air filter won't suffice for our 6v92 application, provided the airflow isn't obstructed. |

Leon - The way this thread's going, it's sounding like the air cleaner's in the rear-most baggage bin. But, in reality, it's inside the LR service door (between the rear axle and back bumper), correct? Your truck mechanic has had his head under too many conventional and cab-overs for this recommendation. Why? Think about it: ~ Where's the engine in a truck?? ~ Where's the engine in your MCI?? ~ How many wheels are in front of the truck air cleaner kicking up dust & dirt?? ~ How many wheels are in front of the MCI's air filter kicking up dust & dirt?? ~ Where's the A/C condensor on a truck?? ~ Where's the A/C condensor on your MCI?? ~ How much dust & dirt does the A/C condensor fan on a truck kick up?? ~ How much dust & dirt does the A/C condensor fans kick up on your MCI?? JTNG is right, in theory. But the application defies theory. It's not unusual for the GM guys, when they clean their air filters at regular service intervals, to remove 6 - 8 pounds (!) of dirt from the canisters. That air filter is oversized for at least three reasons: to protect the engine internals from the dirty environment where it lives, to maintain adequate airflow to the engine, and to extend service intervals (which saves the commercial operator $$$, too!). This is a good example of why it's hard to second-guess the factory engineers. OTOH, you could go ahead and use a smaller filter, providing you're prepared to clean it far more frequently than is required by the OEM unit. FWIW & HTH, RJ PD4106-2784 Fresno CA |

Thanks Guys' He is a good diesel machanic, but not a bus mechanic and thats why I like to check the board before I would make any change.I find lots of guys on board who have bin-there,dun-it and bougth the tee-shirt. So instead of using master-card I use board (price-less). leon |

I put a truck air filter on my 8V92ta with no problem...and it's a third the price of the one that was on the bus. It came off a Cat C15 with twin turbo's. I have a air filter guage in dash, so I know when it needs changed. Ron |
