I'm going to upgrade the fuel filter on my 4104 and have been watching the Davco filters on ebay. Why would I want a heated filter if I don't plan on running veg oil? Would this help with cold starts? or only with running in sub zero weather? Thanks, Jason Whitaker 4104 |

A block heater will help with cold starts , on DD below 40F is considered a cold start. The heater in the fuel is to help prevent gelling of NON winterized fuel, probably less of a concern for an RV than a truck running 200K miles a year. Get the block heater First , then worry about better filtration if you are planning on much time South of the Border. FAST FRED |

I have a block heater already and it works good. Thought maybe if the fuel heater helped with cold starting I might be persuaded to spend a bit more and get one. Thanks FF Jason Whitaker |

Hey Jason: IF you can get a DD started, fuel gelling is seldom a concern because it routes fuel through the heads and continually heats it. You could keep a 5 gal. can of winterized diesel around in case you need to fill up your filters and only have summer blends in the tank. I don't really have a problem with the canister fuel filters. They fill up and go on fast. What do the Davco filters improve on? Sight glass? Spin on? What's the price? Just curious. The oil filter was an entirely different story, and I upgraded it to spin-on. I agree with FF: A Zerostart block heater off the ePlace will be the best 30 bucks you'll ever spend towards your DD. Plug it in for a few hours and you'll crank her off on the coldest Colorado morning, smoke free. Speaking of CO, we should get together and swap GMC stories. I'm just down the road from you in Longmont. Brian Brown PD4106-1175 Bus Site |

I wanted one for the clear housing. I figured it would be one less thing to troubleshoot someday when I'm on the side of the road with a dead engine. Hopefully a glance at the filter - clean fuel, no bubbles, must be something else. Or Wow look at the color of that diesel! I picked one up on ebay for $77, supposedly had the heater but when it got here it didn't. Seller hasn't answered email since. $77 ain't bad even unheated, I figured I could sell it, probably for more, and bid on some others but if I don't need the heater I'll get on with life. It does have what I think is a water sensor, need to figure out how to hook it up. Yes lets get together. Maybe I can come down one of these evenings and get a tour of the bus with the ever changing name. I showed my wife your writeup on the camping trip. Told her you started 2 months ago and already beat us to actually going somewhere. Jason Whitaker 4104 |

Yeah, a clear filter would be nice, heated or not… as long as the filter elements were readily-available and not too pricey. Speaking of, you shoulda seen the primary I pulled off the ’06 before our little camping trip… an oozing, red-rust, sludge-fest. I was amazed that the thing ran for miles to get me to my house from the storage lot with that thing. It’s a testament to the “Energizer Bunny” engineering that went into these Detroits… like forty years ago. I’m still working through the twenty year-old fuel in the Diesel tank, so I’m trying to keep my driving local until it’s gone. [So, the family thinks we’re just camping in our new bus. Everybody wins!] I didn’t want to have to siphon it off and take to the local County Haz. Mat. place the way I’m going to have to do with the 50 gals. of varnished-out gasoline in the genset tank. Soo… I’ll be swapping filters for awhile now, and luckily they’re only six bucks a pop. After that I might go FuelPro or Davco, sure. Yes, let’s do have our busses meet soon… and us, too. Because my wife bores with the bustalk very quickly. BUT, she let me buy a bus (or three), so she’s a saint! Oh, I was out shopping for a rental space today and stumbled across a nice Eagle (w/ Mexican plates) and an abused MC8 out in the RV storage hinterlands. No matter what shape they’re in, though, they’re such a welcome sight from the endless arrays of Arrows, and Winnies, and Fleetwood junk. Gawd I love busses…. Brian |

"I wanted one for the clear housing" Clear housings are usually found on the MARINE filter version, the truck instalation will use a darker color plastic to reduce the light avilable for bugs to grow in the fuel. FAST FRED |
