Game Lodge Camp Ground
« on: November 15, 2012, 09:57:53 PM »
This past summer I stayed 4 nights at the Game Lodge CG, Custer, SD.  What a wonderful experience, rode the 800cc ATV all over the area (It is licensed in MT) so can ride on any road except the Interstate, lots fun, Buffalo, Bear, Buros, you name it, no Brown Bear, but most other western animals you will see.
The CG, is very fine, good electric, good cell and internet via Verizon.even the weather was perfect, jacket in the AM,take it off after lunch even in late July.
Also Mount Rushmore is there and can be seen from many locations, I enjoyed the view best from the Needles Highway, Do not take your coach on that road.
Enjoy

Should add, the Camp ground Fee is $24.00 day, Good 50 Amp power, water and dump.  The Game Loop Road is a biggie, see much including the Burros, Donkeys to us easterners, they were left from the 1800's, the gold diggers left them to fend for them self and they do that very well, one will stand in the center of the road, stopping traffic, others will stick their nose in the window looking for food handouts, when no more is coming, they back away, that must be the signal to the guard in middle of road, as he backs off and when traffic clears, he gets back on road for next gaggle of tourists. Oh they have a game plan, I fed em carrots and laughed alot. Guess they are wild, but act civilized at window, they are not dumb animals, brighter than a few I know.
Too much to mention in that area, just glad I did it all.

www.custerstatepark.com       will get you into the main info center, from there you can start investigating all the 71,000 acres of the park.
we are looking forward to the next trip already. A 3700 mile round trip for us,  could retire there in summer time then exit to warmer pastures.

Just returned from the Big Horn Mtns, was good, but prefer the Custer State Park.
Have not been everywhere nor done every thing, but so far the Black Hills Custer State Park is my favorite by far, plenty ATV riding, buffalo ad other animals, elevation 5-6 k ASL, very comfy and interesting, just take it easy and enjoy, don't try to push the buffalo they don't play well.

Yup, the Buffalo have a very poor sense of humor, over the years a few idiots have been killed, many escaped with their lives, a few Harley Davidson's have been turned into scrap when the driver gets little pushy & making noise. Just wait them out or make a U turn.  They also play rough watching the different age groups trying to show who is the baddest. The old bull that got evicted from the heard, just walks solo along the road way with out a family.
One of my very favorite places to set back and watch, even the Burro's are very interesting to watch how they hold up folks for eats in a nice way, non aggressive.

There are times I can relate with that old bull. Ok no tipping. I'll bring some extra eats, I'm a sucker for most critters

Funny, The Burros seem to love the carrot nubbins (thumb size), they lined up until I ran out, I guess they are wild, but are very calm at the window, I hand them the carrot, they take it with their lips, you never see teeth, just like a horse only much smarter.  They sure have learned how to hold traffic until the food is gone, then they disappear until the next gaggle of traffic, they stop them and pull the same game looking for food.  Once I parked the ATV back about 150' and watched them, when I felt a nose trying to search my pocket for grub.  I just enjoyed the whole event.
They have signs "Dont feed the animals" but these Burros are well trained on beggin.  For me, the whole area just gives me the warm fuzzy feelin, I enjoy just being there and at $24.00 a nite with 50 Amp, Water & Sewer dump, great Verison cell & internet 4G coverage at the Game Lodge Campground, its a win win.

Yes, buros / donkeys sure are deviously smart like you say, like defective people.  Fun to watch them, and understand how they have survived all these years since being turned loose in the area once the gold prospectors gave up, turned them loose and left.  Leaving them to survive the best they could and they have. ;D
