I know this is a slightly old topic but Custer State Park is great in the fall. They do a buffalo round up around this time of year. Not sure of the date. The family and I would make several trips a year to Custer. Love that place! Would camp at Game Lodge near the barn. Fun to watch the bats come out of the bat house as the sun was going down. Waking up to a Herd of buffalo grazing just on the other side of the fence.

Agree for sure, as for the Buffalo events this year,
Buffalo Round up is Sept 26, 2014, Friday.
 Buffalo Auction, Nov 15, 2014

Check out the webpage;   www.custerstatepark.com   lots of info.

I found early Oct is too late for me, when there the 1st time, Oct 2, snowing, winds about 40 mph and 28F, time for this Va. kid to move on down the road.

Also prefer the Game Lodge RV Campground.  Yes am glad the Buffalo are half way happy in the fenced area as in the real world, fencing is guard railing about 5' high when they are bring forced to surrender,  other wise the fence around the park is mostly for looks.  If a Buffalo wanted, walking thru it would be simple.
Love the place.

This summer the Sturgis Motorcycle event will celebrate their 75th annual get to gether, word is there will be over 1,000,000 attendees. That is too many for me. Since it is  close to Rapid City, Custer State Park & Mt Rushmore there will be some mass confusion traffic wise etc.
Check out their web-page for dates & info.

Good luck

Sold the Foretravel after 9 years due to the DW would never travel with me.
At age 75 is not the time to be 2or3,000 miles apart and one of his have a
health issue. So the coach left. Now I plan on taking the new F150 to Custer
State Park in the spring, love that area.
